Windows 8.1 error: "thread stuck in device driver"

After installing the Windows 8.1 update without issue, every time I turn on my computer a screen appears that saying that there was an error when the last session ended, and that the issue pertains to "thread_stuck_in_device_driver". This has occurred every time for the last 6 days, and I have used system restore and Windows Update and the issue still remains. Has anyone found a solution to a similar problem?

Thanks, Jarred

The Dell support page offers a few things to check, but says if all else fails, replace the video card.

Maybe replacing the video card is worth it to get rid of all the headaches.

THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER

This Blue Screen error indicates that a device driver-almost always a video card driver-is stuck waiting for something (usually a hardware operation) to happen. Most of you have probably seennv4_disp.sys associated with this Blue Screen.

  1. Ensure the video drivers are updated to the latest Dell version.
  2. The system BIOS is fully up-to-date.
  3. If both the video driver and the system BIOS are fully up-to-date, check with the manufacturer for recent driver updates.
  4. As a last resort, try exchanging the video card.

Note: Reinstalling Windows is not likely to prevent this error from reoccurring.

Did uninstalling the AMD radeon drivers through device manager (like shown below) cause any problems?

Have the same issue since I upgraded to windows 8.1 and been trying to find a proper solution to this.

I too have that problem. If you have improved your AMD 7730M drives, could you please provide me the site from where you have downloaded the updates?

I had a similar issue.  It turned out to be the AMD 7730M drivers.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my Dell Inspiron laptop would no longer sleep.  Any attempt to make it sleep would result in a full restart.  I tried to update the Catalyst drivers, but any attempt to remove/upgrade the drivers using the Catalyst software resulted in a blue screen crash, with the same thread_stuck_in_device_driver error.  In the end, I uninstalled the AMD Radeon HD 7730M device through the Device Manager, and then installed the lastest AMD drivers from the Dell website.  This fixed the issue and my laptop now sleeps again.  No more blue screens.

    Hi Dash,

The same thing happened to me when I upgraded to Windows 8.1. uninstalling and installing the AMD Radeon HD 7730M device fixed the thread_stuck_in_device_driver error. However, every time I put it to sleep, it still results in a full restart.

Has anyone been able to resolve this issue?

hello Rajith, I also have the "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" error show up every time I open my laptop, I tried your solution however the yellow exclamation mark was on "Bluetooth audio device"

I right clicked on it and opened properties, it said in 'device status'

"This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Object Path Component was not a directory object."

I don't know what to do to fix it, in the settings it says the driver is up to date and I don't need any updates whatsoever, please help me

    Hi JordanQuiroz,

Did you actually reinstall the drivers? I downloaded and installed from the Dell support site (enter your service tag and let it show the available drivers) - rather than downloading from the Microsoft site. I had to reinstall the wifi and bluetooth drivers because my wifi was not working at all, but it was when I subsequently installed the AMD Radeon driver that it fixed my THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER problem.
