Windows 8.1 error: "thread stuck in device driver"

After installing the Windows 8.1 update without issue, every time I turn on my computer a screen appears that saying that there was an error when the last session ended, and that the issue pertains to "thread_stuck_in_device_driver". This has occurred every time for the last 6 days, and I have used system restore and Windows Update and the issue still remains. Has anyone found a solution to a similar problem?

The Dell support page offers a few things to check, but says if all else fails, replace the video card.

Maybe replacing the video card is worth it to get rid of all the headaches. 

THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER

This Blue Screen error indicates that a device driver-almost always a video card driver-is stuck waiting for something (usually a hardware operation) to happen. Most of you have probably seennv4_disp.sys associated with this Blue Screen.

  1. Ensure the video drivers are updated to the latest Dell version.
  2. The system BIOS is fully up-to-date.
  3. If both the video driver and the system BIOS are fully up-to-date, check with the manufacturer for recent driver updates.
  4. As a last resort, try exchanging the video card.

Note: Reinstalling Windows is not likely to prevent this error from reoccurring.

    hello Rajith, I also have the "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" error show up every time I open my laptop, I tried your solution however the yellow exclamation mark was on "Bluetooth audio device"

    I right clicked on it and opened properties, it said in 'device status'

    "This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    Object Path Component was not a directory object."

    I don't know what to do to fix it, in the settings it says the driver is up to date and I don't need any updates whatsoever, please help me

    Hi guys,

    I too have this issue with my Dell 7520 15R SE laptop, I listened to @GrahamLSteel advice and it has worked for me for now (thanks)...but this works for a week then doesn't :S. Something to do with the AMD 7730M Driver!

    Even with restart it takes 170 seconds whereas before with windows 8 it was 30 from restart.

    Dell need to update their Windows 8.1 drivers to be more compatible.

    At-least i can hibernate/go sleep/shut down now within 15 sec / 2 sec and for shut down 30 odd seconds.

    Although my AMD video driver show v13.151.0.0, my blue screen issue has not gone away.  Microsoft, please fix this issue!

    Thank you GrahamSteel. I did update my AMD video driver to v13.151.0.0 and now my laptop starts instantly and sleeps well :) :D

    On the Dell Support Centre website I was shown 2 display driver updates, one for AMD Radeon 7730M and the other for Intel(R) HD 4000. I updated the one for AMD as I mentioned above. The version for Intel(R) HD 4000 was v10.18.10.3277 dated 03/10/2013 which my computer claims to be the lower version. Currently, the Intel driver is v10.18.10.3316 dated 01/10/2013 on my laptop. I haven't updated this one since my BLUE screen issue was solved. Is it necessary to update this? Also, should I update my bluetooth and wifi drivers as well like you mentioned in the earlier thread.

    Sounds like you have made a good step forward Samidha! When I first installed Windows 8.1 and it booted up, I found the wifi completely broken, so wifi and bluetooth were the first drivers that I reinstalled. So if wifi is not working well for you, reinstall the drivers. Personally I am just hoping that my problems are over, and I will go and reinstall more drivers if the computer plays up again.
