Tried to the new release 8.1 today 10/17. My desktop was successful, but my laptop failed with can't update to 8.1 0xC1900101-0x20017.
I have read a clean install may be required. I have just installed windows 7 then upgraded to windows 8 about one month ago. Is there a way of downloading an ISO image for 8.1 and a key to due a clean install of 8.1 without paying $150.
The laptop is a ASUS U43F with a Crucial M500 960GB SSD.

I couldn't agree more. There's no reason why this laptop shouldn't be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1.
After all this time for this thread, it's obvious that Microsoft or Asus cares whether this is resolved! They want you to abandon this equipment and buy newer equipment that's compatible. They both benefit in this way!!!

I bought the U43F with the promise that an update to Windows 8 would be possible.. so it seems MS and ASUS are resting on that turn of phrase. Windows 8 DOES run on it....but Windows 8 is junk and both companies know it. Windows 8.1 is what Win 8 SHOULD have been.. so now I am stuck with a $700 paperweight. I have a custom desktop and it runs 8.1 like a champ. None of the components in the U43F are legacy enough to warrant 8.1 not install-able. I feel as though I have been robbed AND lied to. I would't have purchased this laptop if it weren't for the promise of Win 8 compatibility. I was looking at a Samsung at the time. I have been a loyal MS CUSTOMER since the DOS days! This needs to be fixed for all of us!
Our post about not being able to upgrade to 8.1 was specifically the model U43F Asus laptop. I also have a custom built desktop Asus mother board computer without any problems running 8.1. Therefore, your post did not apply to all those wanting to upgrade to 8.1 their U43F laptops. Thanks for trying
