Had the same problem and DiaconuDaniel's solution worked for me as well - took a while to recreate the index but then everything was fine - Thanks

I found my culprit to be PDF's like some other people.

However, after experimenting I found I could leave PDF indexed like normal, but change the option below under 'How should this file be indexed' from 'index properties and file contents' to 'index properties only'.

After that, I hit the rebuild button and CPU usage doesn't top 9%, and 15min later it says it's done indexing and CPU usage is back to its normal 1-4% usage.

This change should apply to other file types as well.
