Had the same problem and DiaconuDaniel's solution worked for me as well - took a while to recreate the index but then everything was fine - Thanks

    Rebuilding the index seems to work temporarily. I recommend also installing Adobe's PDF iFilter to help windows better index the contents of PDF files.

    I also think that leaving the computer on overnight while the index rebuilds so that there aren't interruptions in the process is a good idea.

    2 years and having this issue on the latest build of Windows is shameful. It cuts my Surface's battery life in half. 😭😒

    Thank you for the support. When I disabled the .XML from the index the CPU usage dropped from 25% to 3.5%.

    Between the search filter host and the presentation font cache my cpu as been running at 90% on a regular basis (I ck it at least once an hour when I am using it; for several weeks now and it takes over 12 minutes for it to start up after a complete power down.  I have a corei5-3230 processor. The machine is naked (Windows 10 Factory default except for  updates).  Took it to the MS Store and they spent two days and gave it back saying that the machine was working normally s expected. They suggested that I upgrade to a Core i7 machine if I wanted better performance saying that my machine was old and could not keep up with the demands of newer operating systems. (Toshiba Satellite Pro and is only  three years old).

    I am just going to live with it until windows 12 comes out. I do most stuff on my Android tablet now anyways.
