Had the same problem and DiaconuDaniel's solution worked for me as well - took a while to recreate the index but then everything was fine - Thanks

    My Laptop being in the state as above, Microsoft Windows Search Filter Host processe takes up there at more than 50% CPU, as temperature increases and auto shutdown after an hour of use; I try to end task it off then my laptop operations very smoothly, reduce temperature immediately. But it's been a while, then it automatically run again. I tried to follow three method above and full scan virus, malware that have yet to overcome. What's worse ... look forward to microsoft support fix for me.

    I have this same problem and none of these steps, nor various other suggestions from the WWW have been able to stop this monster from eating my CPU cycles? Is there any way to disable it entirely?

    I had this same problem suddenly when I updated to windows 8.1.

    What fixed my problem was to disable indexing on openoffice/libreoffice files and xml files.  

    How to:

    1. Go to control panel
    2. Search for "indexing options"
    3. Click "indexing options"
    4. Select "advanced"
    5. Click the "file types"  tab
    6. Press the o key on your keyboard
    7. Unselect file type:   odb odg odm odp ods odt otg oth otp ots ott xml

    7.1) additional files to remove from inexing if your still having troupble:  properties, yml, java, class, nb

    I will update this If I notice any other file types which cause this issue.
