The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer from task manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

Hope his helps.

I replied to Art's lengthy article (see below) which included several suggestions.  Note: I have performed Google searches for the most recent suggestions to see if anything worked! I have also gone through this Microsoft community blog which is now very lengthy with almost unmanageable threads.

I would seem that to date, the only real solutions are as follows:

    (1) New ID (tried this and not a "happy", also some say it is a temporary fix)

    (2) Restore or reinstall W10

NOTE: After trying all suggestions, I now have two IDs. I can hobble along with my former ID ... BUT, no Cortana and no "?" help button!

    Art:

    Thank you for the suggestions.

I have tried all except the last two ... disabling, uninstalling anti-virus, and reinstalling. I have my doubts that Norton is the problem!

Obviously restoring W10 is a lot of work and something I chose to avoid since a lot of software would have to be reinstalled.

Definitely ignore their repeated nagging to upgrade! I wish I had.

I'd be willing to bet there is something in the small print which would allow MS very expensive lawyers to wriggle out of any responsibility for the issues.
