The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer from task manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

Hope his helps.

    Hi,

    I am in total agreement!

I have also tried everything from this thread & that I could find on Google!

Norton is not the problem as I run AVG security and have the identical issue.

Like you, I am stuck with a new ID that works but has none of my old software or settings so I too am 'hobbling' along on my old one with non-functioning Start Menu, Cortana/Help or any Modern Apps. Re-installing Win 10 and losing all of my software & settings is NOT an option as I would lose all of the sync settings, programs, patches etc.. I have set up with many pieces of music production hardware & some of the software is rare & difficult to find - reinstalling everything from scratch would never recover me to where I should be & would take me 3-6 months, which is UNACCEPTABLE!

MISCROSOFT need to fix this corruption/bug/fault in Windows 10 and release a new update that fixes the problem whilst still keeping all of our files/apps/programs/settings etc, just as the update from 8.1 to 10 did and as the hugely problematic update from original versions of Windows 10 to the even worse 112015, (November 2015), major update.*

*Widows 10 original release was unstable but at least some easy steps restored the Start Menu/help & Modern App functionality, (& at worst a Restart always seemed to fix things), however since the November 201511 major update, (which annoyingly destroyed all restore points & could not be rolled back), the real problems have started and cannot be fixed! It seems Microsoft do not care at all about this issue as it has been known for months & no fix in sigh; I spent over 2 hours online with a MS Tech and the best that he could do was create a new user ID that works fine but has NONE of my essential software or settings so is in fact useless!

It seems strange that Windows 10 can work fine on the same machine on one User ID but not on another.... SURELY Microsoft could find a way of fixing the corrupted files on the faulty, important User ID as the correct ones MUST be on the machine, IF ONLY they could start CARING and be BOTHERED!!!!!

FYI, I tried a complete restore on one of my affected computers (thorough drive wipe). Restored fresh W10 and within a day, the bug was back. Leads me to believe it has to do with the ms user account. I haven't tried the new user account workaround because I can't risk having that get messed up at this point (which I've read is a big headache).

On my mind the only solution is to revert to Win 8.1 (and to stay there...). I tried to reinstall Win 10 and for some days it seemed to be working fine but then all of a sudden, it kept occurring again. That happened for 3 times! Since then I gave up reinstalling Win 10 and reverted to the "old" Win 8.1.
