On my machine (Windows 7, 64 Bit) the TrustedInstaller.EXE is permanently active. The amount of used CPU changes permanently. 2 seconds 0 % then up to 50% (I have a dual core) for a second then down to 0.
Rebooting the machine did not help. Also a complete Virus scan was negative.
I have monitored the process with the Process Explorer tool. I can see that the process always access the same Registry key when it gets active. The key is
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-IIS-WebServer-AddOn-2-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.

in the meantime I have found the process that was responsible for the trustedinstaller activities. It was the xenservice.exe that was installed together with the Citrix XenCenter on my machine. I have killed this process and suddenly the trustedinstaller.exe stopped its activities. So the problem is solved now because the XenCenter can work without this process and I will remove it from the auto

well I finally got what I think is all the updates installed. No more 100% CPU usage going on at this moment. But it sure is a PITA with such poor update servers.
I also went in and removed a bunch of KBs that are related to W10 upgrade. Checked for new updates and hid them. hehehe X Fingers!
I had this set to check for updates but let me decided whether to install them. Something over rode that and changed it all back to automatic.
Best keep and eye on that.
She never uses this with office so it's Firefox browser and Thunderbird now.
So at this point in time things look good for here laptop.
Now to clean up My PC that I use for photography and stop W10 from installing.
That is exactly what happened to me. Then on another try I picked 107 updates to install so it woulnd't choke on memory. They installed BUT another problem arose - on reboot I got "Windows cannot configure these updates. Changes will be reverted." I hope you do not get these messages but many have as you can find on another forum.
Crazy part is some updates did get installed but the vast majority shows Failed. On each attempt I seem to get a different amount, 222, 241, 107, 85 and I am trying yet again with an unknown amount.
The same problem, 'Windows cannot configure' has bugged a lot of other people as I found on another forum page.
Just a heads up to you - it ain't over 'til there are no more updates - once at that point you may upgrade to Win 10 or continue with Windows 7 that you have now. Don't be tricked - at one point my Win 7 said there were no more updates for your computer. Next time I tried to update (after 4 hour wait) it said there are 88 updates...WTH?
For me, if it fails one more time I will put it aside until next week - otherwise I might have to shoot it! :-)
Once I do a clean install, get updates properly and so on I will also make a partition image in case I need to recover in the future for I never want to go through this misery again. Good luck.
To bad these posts are not time stamped LOL. 24 hrs later it finally got 205 updates installed before the low memory issue popped up. Took 3 hours to tell me I have 30 more updates and I know we are not finished yet.
When I get this finished with no KB updates for W 10 (I'll remove them) I am going to turn off updates and make a disk image for this laptop.
I'm also going to put Microsoft into my hosts file and stop it altogether from connecting.
Next job it to clean out my PC that I use for my photography so it doesn't install W10 on it.
I have lost all trust now with MS over this.
I think your right and MS is throttling their download servers.
Not good news for me! So I am having a similar experience with updates. Takes hours for it to find and list them. At first I had it set to Auto. download AND install updates. Big mistake! Installing 222 updates at one time caused a LOW MEMORY message to appear. I did my best to free up more memory and also increased the Virtual Memory settings to 5902. No help on that try,
On the next try it came up with 241 updates! Since it was still in auto. mode it tried to install all of them at one sitting so to speak. It HUNG on #214 for 3 hours before I killed it. I had not changed updates to download only and let me pick which to install. This time the laptop ran out of memory at #237 of 241~~not good. Once again I had to kill it and of course it REVERTED changes.
Each time I killed it would cause changes to revert. After that it only found 107 updates. I had changed it to d/l and advise me. This amount did install BUT when it shutdown it only partially configured and said it failed configuring but it rebooted itself and tried to install on startup. On startup this time it went to 6% and failed to configure once again.
Checking installed history I see many updates did install - mostly .NET 3.5.1 security updates. This morning I have it looking for updates now so it will be a while.
My plan is to clean install Win 7 Pro when it arrives next week. Your news is not good for me. If a clean install doesn't work out I am not sure of my next steps.
It is definitely on MS! All other downloads including programs, PDFs, etc. download and install without issue. I don't know why MS has problems but I have suspicions. It could be that so many globally are still updating to W10 and so we get low priority; it could be that MS is trying to discourage reusing older equipment so you will buy new with W10 already installed.
I have been a PC tech for many years and have never seen such misery bringing a PC up to date.
