Warner Music CD's sound is distorted on Dell Windows 7 computer

I have a new Dell computer operating on Windows 7. Some cd's will not play or download on Windows Media Player or iTunes as the sound is totally distorted. These same cd's were fine on my old Dell with Windows XP. The cd's also play on Hi Fi's and other computers without any problems. Is this a problem with Windows 7? (all the cd's seem to be produced by Warner Music or their associated companies).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ASTRA52,

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also suggest you to install the latest sound drivers compatible for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website.

    As expected, Mêlée's Devils & Angels plays fine on my computer (LG CD drive).

    There's already 5 threads in this forum about the Warner Bros CDs' distorted sound, one user got his issue fixed with a new firmware/driver update for the CD drive on his Toshiba computer. Another got a full refund from Dell. I suggest you contact your PC/CD drive manufacturer and show them this thread, to show that it's a real problem with a simple fix (firmware/driver update). This series of CD drives Dell integrated is just c.r.a.p, they should fix this problem.

    It can't be a generic win7-WB compatibility issue, or it would affect all win7 users.

    Yup - I happened to have an external CDROM drive, bought when my old computer's tray got a bit temperamental. Plug that in and Melee comes through clear as a bell. So my guess is that it's the drivers for certain CD drives that hit the problem. Maybe Win7 versions, maybe not. I have a shipped "TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653G ATA Device", according to Device manager. My ten-Brit-pound CDROM MATSHITA CR-176 has no problems.

    Of course, a cd drive ought to play cds, simple as that, whoever made 'em. It's not a copyright issue - the basic requirement is Play. Any copy problems should only be manifest on Rip - but even then, how else do we load our legal iPods? The iTunes Store? (a rhetorical question to the Powers That Be, not a response to anyone!).

    WB has been using Cactus Data Shield (aka Copy Controlled) copy protection since the early 2000s, but I thought they would have stopped by now, since Macrovision shut down this program. CDS is known for having compatibility issues with many CD drives. You should really try a recent external CD player from a different brand to see if the problem comes from your internal drive indeed.

    Maybe try disabling autoplay if these CDs still use CDS, which is doubtful. You can then look at the CD file structure in Windows Explorer to spot anything abnormal. Try also the EAC ripper, it's supposed to be good at handling this kind of CDS read errors and table of content corruptions.
