Warner Music CD's sound is distorted on Dell Windows 7 computer

I have a new Dell computer operating on Windows 7. Some cd's will not play or download on Windows Media Player or iTunes as the sound is totally distorted. These same cd's were fine on my old Dell with Windows XP. The cd's also play on Hi Fi's and other computers without any problems. Is this a problem with Windows 7? (all the cd's seem to be produced by Warner Music or their associated companies).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ASTRA52,

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also suggest you to install the latest sound drivers compatible for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website.

    I gave up trying to correct this problem but I did find a way around it.

    I put all the Warner Bros CDs that were distorted on to my home PC which is running with Vista and then used a memory stick to transfer the files onto my Windows 7 laptop. It's a bit of a hassle but the songs play with no problem on w7 now.

    As I said before, it has to be a windows 7 - Warner Bros compatibility problem to do with the copy protection software. People are going to download music illegally regardless of copy protection so it seems a little ridiculous WB would make things harder for people who actually purchase their CDs.

    Hi. All the CDs I have tried ripping or playing which are distorted are WB and from before 2009. My laptop is a Compaq and was preloaded with Windows 7. Is begining to look like it is something to do with WB anti copying software interacting with Windows 7. Non WB discs rip and play fine and I have not found this problem with any other companies discs (so far!!).

    It's probably not Dell, but the internal CD player they ship with. Is it still under warranty?

    Try installing a new CD/DVD drive in your tower, or borrow an external drive to see if it's related to your current drive.

    There were cheap $17 deals on tigerdirect for a CD/DVD drive, too bad they ended yesterday.

    None of my WB CDs is older than 2009, and they all rip and play fine.

    I found Mêlée's Devils and Angels for 1 cent + shipping on amazon, so I just ordered it to check if it's a recent (2010) problem with WB, but I expect (hope) there will be nothing wrong with the CD, or there would have been a massive recall. See you in a few days...

    Well, my version of Melee is 2007, and there is nothing wrong with it as a cd. It ripped OK in Dec 2009, and that ripped file plays fine on both XP and Windows 7. It's only Windows 7 that has an issue with the original cd and any new rip I make from it. Windows 7 is perturbed by something in the cd file which was effectively invisible to my 2009 rip. I don't know whether Dell is an additional factor - other posters have mentioned it. Mine's an Inspiron tower (the successful 2009 file was probably ripped on my Dell Dimension, though I can't be 100% sure).

    PS that last prompted me to try it on my daughter's Windows 7 laptop and it is fine. It's an Acer, and was preloaded with Vista then upgraded to W7 rather than shipped with W7. So the prime factors so far appear to be Dell and/or preloaded W7 (can't tell which) and Warners.
