Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

I have turned off my Zone Alarm Extreme Security software, but I get exactly the same answer.

Unfortunately the message does not tell me which file(s) are causing the problem and the error message is so vague I can't try to resolve the issue.

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Firstly, I’d suggest you to uninstall the antivirus program and try to perform a system restore and check if that fixes the issue.

If the above steps do not help, try doing a system restore from safe mode and check if that works fine.

    This same error just popped up when I tried to do a system restore on a brand new laptop running windows 8.1. WTF Microsoft? I attempted to system restore from the pretty blue Advanced Startup Options (ASO) screen that is accessed by holding down the shift key while selecting restart from the various power options on the initial Log-in screen. Fortunately I am still in an optimizing and decrapifying stage of deploying this laptop for my wife to use as her business machine, so I have a very recent system image created two days ago using Macrium Reflect that I'm going to try instead. When I create the Macrium image, I never imagined I'd be using it this soon, if ever. Oh well, I guess I get to try that out as well now, although it's a bit more radical than I initially intended to be. To do the complete system restore, I essentially have to violate that old maxim that says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The laptop in question has no installed anti-virus software (I uninstalled the bundled Mcafee trialware) which flatly contradicts the contention that it's an antivirus program that is the culprit. Unless you contend that a Microsoft window 8.1 system restore feature is not compatible with a Microsoft  windows 8.1 system protection feature (Windows Defender). Nah, that could never happen, right? :-/ So why am I even attempting a system restore on a new machine that is essentially running great? Well I hate surprises happening down the road like finding out that something critical won't work just when I need it to work most. Like I just discovered now with "System Restore". Good grief, this has been and issue for how long now? How many people are going to be relying on this feature to get them out of an OS fix only to discover that it doesn't work just when they need it? I shudder to think.

    I'm having trouble accessing system recovery. When I first start my PC  you know how it takes you to the black screen and it gives you the options " Launch startup Repair ( recommend) " and " startup windows Normally"? Well above those options it saids "windows error recovery". My PC  is a HP Pavilion MS227 and when I choose " Launch startup Repair, it takes me to the "Recovery Manager" in the first section "I need help immediately", the third option which is " System Recovery" is blacked out which means I can't access it. Can you please give me detailed steps on what I need to do to get my PC back to normal? Your pleased to ask questions to get more detail on the situation and the PC.

    But what should I do if the only AV on my system is Windows Defender? Switching it of didn't help. Windows 8. I'm sure I have never had a single virus or something and double sure since I've checked with Kaspersky one-time tool, so the thing with the system restore is not due to malware.
