"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

I have turned off my Zone Alarm Extreme Security software, but I get exactly the same answer.

Unfortunately the message does not tell me which file(s) are causing the problem and the error message is so vague I can't try to resolve the issue.

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Firstly, I’d suggest you to uninstall the antivirus program and try to perform a system restore and check if that fixes the issue.

If the above steps do not help, try doing a system restore from safe mode and check if that works fine.

    Hello , i have the same issue where i am trying to restore my pc and a error message appears stating i must disable my antivirus.

    I have tired all the suggestions in this forum. None have worked. I have uninstalled my antivirus "trend" , I have tried restoring in safe mode and have disabled all windows defenders as well.

    The same error message occurs. Please help !

    What else can i do ?

    Every time that I have run into this I have had to use msconfig to force a "clean boot" and then look for processes that are running on the system that aren't OS related and then begin by shutting them down one-by-one until I find the culprit.  If that fails then I start sutting down and disabling "Services" that are not OS related or that are not system critical.  As you all know this problem is a real pain in the A _ _ , and so is trying to find the root cause.

    For now I rely on Acronis's backup solution ....

    I had lacked success at using restore and decided to finally research if anyone else had a problem.  Well, I feel better now.  I too tried incrementally debugging and finally decided it was not worth the time and so, for example, right now I'm restoring from a WHS backup to fix a bad bluetooth driver install.

    This problem has been around since the release of Vista and is common to bot Vista & Windows 7.  The reference to an "anti-virus" possiblby bing the cause, is simply a SWAG on thir part.  I have seen this problen show up on "new" systems and systems that have never had an anti-virus installed on them.  That not sysing that an anti-virus could not cause this error but it clearly is ot the only potential reason.  From what I have seen any application that holds onto system resources (Hung, Service, etc...) can cause this problem.  I even seen it caused by defragging software that runs resident on the system, such as Diskeeper.  In the case of Diskeeper if you shut down the "service" and disable it, Restore will tpically work again, that's asumming that it was the only culprit in the sytem.
