System Restore does not work and returns the following error 0x80070005:__

"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

I have turned off my Zone Alarm Extreme Security software, but I get exactly the same answer.

Unfortunately the message does not tell me which file(s) are causing the problem and the error message is so vague I can't try to resolve the issue.

Hi Rotherboy,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Firstly, I’d suggest you to uninstall the antivirus program and try to perform a system restore and check if that fixes the issue.

Refer the link below for more on uninstalling programs:

Uninstall or change a programhttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Uninstall-or-change-a-program

If the above steps do not help, try doing a system restore from safe mode and check if that works fine.

Refer the below link for more details on starting your computer in safe mode:

Start your computer in safe modehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Let us know if this helps!

Regards,

Gokul - Microsoft Support

I found the suggestion leading to the Norton site. I followed it and did as instructed. Unchecked "Norton Intrusion Protection". Did a System Restore and it worked. I hope this is the final answer. Good luck to all.

I agree with Rotherboy. System restore worked flawlessly in VISTA (and I think XP). I've tried all the solutions I've seen so far and none work. In fact one, Start Volume Shadow caused bootup problems that took 10 minutes for the system to resolve. I did the ckdsk/r and uncheck hide system files and uncheck read only. So, I hope someone in MS will step up to the plate and solve this problem. The only thing I haven't done is disable Norton and I ain't gona do that.

I am also experiencing the same error; however, your solution did not work for me.

I uninstalled Zone Alarm, this did not correct the problem.  I then restarted in SafeMode, which did not work either.  I did not have this problem until the last update that occurred on 9-16-2010.  This update reset all my personal settings including default programs, turned off ZoneAlarm, turned off windows defender, and erased all my stored Access points and their pass phrases.  When the update installed it automatically rebooted without notice, warning or even a prompt, it just shut down and restarted.  Then there is one other disturbing thing that happened with that update, all the previous restore points were deleted.

Luckily I had just made complete image of the drive on the 15th, so I restored my system from that.

So now I am curious where the problem is. So I setup my trusty old bench machine and start with a clean install of Win7, apply all updates, set a restore pioint then installed four programs and then tried to roll back to the restore point. It did not work.  The only security running was the windows firewall and windows defender, no anti-virus.  Tried Safe mode, it still did not work.  Hmmmm?  I then set FULL PERMISSIONS to everyone at the root of the drive and tried again, but still got the same error. (0x80070005)  Hmmm?  NTFS permission problem maybe?

So I dumped that install and started over, but forced an install on a FAT32 partition instead.  Applied updates, set a restore point, install 1 program then tried to restore.  Got the same 0x80070005 error.  For the life of me I can not think of one single way that a system process could be restricted access to a file on a FAT32 partition.

In the mean time I am starting over over again but not applying any update dated after 7-27-10, this is the last time I know the system restore worked,  then I will add one by one until I find the culprit.  By the way when I used it on 7-27 I didn't disable or uninstall anything it just worked without error.

I did a complete uninstall of Zone Alarm and re-installed freshly downloaded software. After this I was able to restore the system to the date I needed and cure my remaining problems with Windows 7.

However, the point I was making was relative to the extra problems inexperienced users would meet if they deleted their security system and failed to re-insatll it correctly, if at all.

'tis a pity Vista was ever released.

However the problem has disappeared for now.
