System Restore does not work and returns the following error 0x80070005:__

Anonymous
2009-11-30T18:24:22+00:00

"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

I have turned off my Zone Alarm Extreme Security software, but I get exactly the same answer.

Unfortunately the message does not tell me which file(s) are causing the problem and the error message is so vague I can't try to resolve the issue.

Hi Rotherboy,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Firstly, I’d suggest you to uninstall the antivirus program and try to perform a system restore and check if that fixes the issue.

Refer the link below for more on uninstalling programs:

Uninstall or change a programhttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Uninstall-or-change-a-program

If the above steps do not help, try doing a system restore from safe mode and check if that works fine.

Refer the below link for more details on starting your computer in safe mode:

Start your computer in safe modehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Let us know if this helps!

Regards,

Gokul - Microsoft Support

My goal is to never again buy a Microsoft product. I may use a free product (i.e., Hyper-v) and I my use my existing licenses forever (XP, Win 7/8, trial versions). I've purchased too many upgrades in my life, all primarily to try to fix issues and not to get new features. Not that Linux and open source are perfect but the effort to make them work for me is no more then that of getting a Microsoft product to work for me but I don't have to pay for the privilege of debugging Linux/open source.

To start System Restore, open the Control Panel, then click on the heading "System and Security", then click on the heading "Administrative Tools", then scroll to the entry titled "Services" and double click on that. Next scroll to the entry titled "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" and right click on that, select "properties" from the menu. In the "Properties" box that opens set "startup type" to 'automatic', and under "Services Status" click on the 'Start' button.

Click on the "Apply" button and then "OK".

This solved my problems with System Restore and no system restore points. I found this fix online.

**Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!**Your recommendation did the trick.  System Restore now Works.  But between Norton & Microsoft; they should get their act together and make reseting of Norton's Tamper Protection an automatic feature of system restore.  We should not have to remember and do this kind of maintenance manually.  I realize this is not your problem, I guess I am just venting.

Anyway, thanks again for the fix to my issue.

The issue is related to 'anti-virus programs' -- as the message says. Norton has the same issue. Well, Norton does have some kind of 'fix' for it. Rotherboy, contact Zona alarm and check if they have some kinda 'fix'.

CJ45440, refer the link below and follow the steps mentioned:

Let me know if that works!

    Cheers!
