System Restore does not work and returns the following error 0x80070005:__

"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

I have turned off my Zone Alarm Extreme Security software, but I get exactly the same answer.

Unfortunately the message does not tell me which file(s) are causing the problem and the error message is so vague I can't try to resolve the issue.

Hi Rotherboy,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Firstly, I’d suggest you to uninstall the antivirus program and try to perform a system restore and check if that fixes the issue.

Refer the link below for more on uninstalling programs:

Uninstall or change a programhttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Uninstall-or-change-a-program

If the above steps do not help, try doing a system restore from safe mode and check if that works fine.

Refer the below link for more details on starting your computer in safe mode:

Start your computer in safe modehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Let us know if this helps!

Regards,

Gokul - Microsoft Support

Anyone here have the System Restore failure with the anti-virus message who has NEVER installed an anti-virus?

I'm battling with this right now, a clean install of Windows 7, trying to restore from before the latest .net update. Joke's on me because I haven't got to the stage where I install an anti-virus yet.

Just for kicks, I disabled Dropbox and anything else that I thought might be starting on this relatively clean install, and no luck.

I find System Restore really useful - thats why I took the trouble to solve why I was getting the error.

If you read through all the threads posted here, the cause of this error is (almost) always that an anti-vurus product was uninstalled leaving traces of its functionality behind.  You can see these if you search the registry (regedit.exe) or look at the services running (services.msc).  It doesn't seem to matter whether its Norton or Panda or any other.  But they all have in common that they need to clean up their uninstall process.  I've explained in another post how I overcame it, and that Safe Mode wasn't the answer. If you read through a few recent posts they should help.

So, the moral of this story. System Restore is worth having - some of the AV products are not.  Me -  Ive gone back to AVG, but I'm not sure they are blameless!

    Same problem here.

I did uninstall avira antivirus.., and it did not work.

In XP system restore worked fine.

    Not in windows 7.

System restore was heralded as a great feature in windows XP.

    No more.

    Gone.

    Kaputt.

None of the many recommended remedies worked for me - including safe mode and disabling anti-virus.

I had installed Panda anti-virus a couple of months ago and uninstalled it. But it left traces behind - entries in registry and a service (in Win7 just type services inat the start button).

The nice people at Panda sent me an uninstall package that removed all trace of Panda, and System Restore then worked.

There may be similar problems with other anti-virus products not cleanly uninstalling.
