System Restore does not work and returns the following error 0x80070005:__

Anonymous
2009-11-30T18:24:22+00:00

"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

Details;

System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

I have turned off my Zone Alarm Extreme Security software, but I get exactly the same answer.

Unfortunately the message does not tell me which file(s) are causing the problem and the error message is so vague I can't try to resolve the issue.

Hi Rotherboy,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Firstly, I’d suggest you to uninstall the antivirus program and try to perform a system restore and check if that fixes the issue.

Refer the link below for more on uninstalling programs:

Uninstall or change a programhttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Uninstall-or-change-a-program

If the above steps do not help, try doing a system restore from safe mode and check if that works fine.

Refer the below link for more details on starting your computer in safe mode:

Start your computer in safe modehttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Let us know if this helps!

Regards,

Gokul - Microsoft Support

    I know this is 4 years after the reported problem and the original poster has either solved the problem or resorted to more drastic measures.

    Ive been wresting with System Restore error 0x80070005 for weeks now and found a solution.

    I had tried all the other suggested remedies (close AV, safe boot, SFC, System Volume Properties etc) to no avail. But I noticed in event viewer that a number of drivers were failing to load. There were 9, commencing with NNSHTTP. It turns out these are residual parts of Panda Anti-Virus left over after their uninstall had failed to run properly.  I'd downloaded their uninstaller and tried it but it didnt clear these entries.

    I contacted Panda Customer Services (more in hope than anything else) and they sent me links to two removal tools:

    http://www.pandasecurity.com/resources/sop/cloudav/generic_uninstaller.exe

    http://www.pandasecurity.com/resources/tools/2015/generic_uninstaller.exe

    These ran and removed the NNS..... driver entries from the registry.

    System Restore now works!!!!

    So what have I learned?

    • First Microsoft could be more helpful with their error messages (nothing new there!)
    • This error - which I've had before - seems definitely linked to Anti-Virus prgrams in general (not just Panda?) - but just uninstalling or closing them is not enough.

    I'm posting this because Ive seen hundreds of posts from people suffering from this error, and just hope this helps someone else.

    'Tis all a chequer board of nights and days,

    Where destiny with men for pieces plays;

    Hither and thither, and mates, and slays.

    Life sucks! Get used to it!

    I removed AVG and Zone Alarm and I was able to do a system restore, where as before then I was getting the error:

    "System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.

    Details;

    System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.

    An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"

    Thanks for suggesting that.
