This is not a reply to your question, but just a comment on your
backup technique. If you are backing up things important to you to a
partition on your hard drive, you are playing with fire. That's the
weakest of all forms of backup, since it is always possible that a
hard drive crash, user error, nearby lightning strike, virus attack,
even theft of the computer, can cause the loss of everything on your
drive. As has often been said, it's not a matter of whether you will
have such a problem, but when. Backup should be to external media,
stored separately from the computer.
