Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Hi rustyredhead,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    Hi Azeez,

    Please advise me by email as soon as you have a fix for us being able to move and position folders within a folder, in Windows 7, like we could in xp. Thanks Jeff Kalinko

    Thanks. I did that already and about 10,000 went into folders, but it doesn't seem to recognise the numbering of the other 17,000; plus, the titles have all been removed - both for folders and individual pics. What a mess!!

    Look on the top right for arrange by, click the down arrow and select date or tag....

    My shock wasn't the windows 7 transfer, but the windows live essentials 2011 shock, of showing just how many duplicates existed, my collection more than doubled in size.

    But fortunately I have the majority tagged and used this to put them in new folders.

    I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 and am devastated by the poor photograph handling progs. What happened to "My Pictures"?  I had 27,000 pics from my old PC (Windows XP), perfectly arranged in folders in My Pictures, which I had stored on an ext hard disc ..  but when I uploaded them to this marvellous advanced Windows 7 it just dumped them (all 27,000) in one folder without titles or numbers!!  Great.  What now Microsoft?
