windows 7: Can't get HDMI audio - the hdmi device does not appear under the playback devices

so yeah you've probably gathered my problem from my title.

i have an integrated intel graphics chip (interestingly enough the intel control pane,l through which i used to control the majority of the devices functions, did not survive the upgrade... it is nowhere to be found)

so i've updated the drivers, and checked the playback devices, and my hdmi cables are plugged in

i get video but no audio, and am not sure i am just missing something simple.

eitherway i've done a lot of searching and have yet to find an answer any help would be much appreciated!

Hello spedlifeshow,

The issue here can be one of several issues, the following may apply:

  • The HDMI graphics card may support HDMI Video, but may not support HDMI Audio
  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows
  • If your HDMI video card does not support audio, you may need to connect additional audio cables between the PC and TV

    Hey nimibear you're right!!!!   Got it working!!!

    I had plugged the HDMI then it appeared in the playback devices and I was able to send sound through.

    The intel update utility is better than microsft's update utility.

    Hi I am really tired and sick by now.

    Every time , well i did clean install to get sound .

    So on clean install i get sound on Gigabyte ga-UD7 and under sound there are speakers and all. Great. then down the track everything goes away .

    Start up next day and speakers or headset not recognised so i have this red x on sound and nothing recognized.

    Did this now like 5 times and it's killing me on all machines i have sound here just till i shut down  and i can plu in out speakers how many times i want nothing though 8 hours b4 were working..??

    PLEASE help

    Thank you for this solution...took me 2 weeks and untold hours of trials and failed support to find your answer which fixed it all for my vaio-vgn=fw170j

    FIRST OF ALL- I did not read all the replies for this thread.

    However, during my research of video cards, very few of them support AUDIO OUT through the HDMI port..

    HDMI does support audio and video, but not magically or by default, last I knew only ATI Cards could do this. And even in this case it is very specific to the situation.

    In my situation I have the Radeon 4870. It has 2 DVI outputs. (no HDMI) But it came with an HDMI converter which if used will pass sound through to the monitor/tv if it has speakers.

    I'm also not sure how you UPGRADED your graphics, do you mean you got an entirely new machine? I believe the HDMI capability of newer computers, is simply to give you more options of what you can connect your monitor to, as well as some resolution choices.

    You shouldn't assume that if you have HDMI you will have Sound and Video in the same cable. Most likely your motherboard doesn't know to route sound to that port, basically it can't even see the HDMI as a viable option for sound because it's just not where the sound goes..
