why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

I did not have the exact folder, but it was still the 90120000 folder on another machine. Copied it over and it worked. I had to unpin fron the task bar so that the taskbar would show the correct icon, but as soon as I did, the icons were there.
I recently had a lost permissions issue with the entire harddrive, so I had to work for a while to reclaim ownership of every file so that I could do anything. It was after this that I had problems with the icons but it never really bothered me. I loked it up just to see what was going on and could not find a solution until I decided to read this entire thread to find the wide variety of answers. This solution by miixs was the solution that worked in my case.
I had the same issue. When I went to the Start button, none of the programs with the generic icon showed up in the Office selection. I used windows explorer to see the program file (excel.exe, winword.exe) and then right clcik the icon > "send to desk top.," delete the generic icon and re-pin to the task bar.
My installation is a 7 premium upgrade on a Vista Business.

Go to the microsoft office installation folder.Typically C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
Right click on Winword.exe and select create shortcut. Copy this shortcut to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office
You will see another shortcut for Word there "Microsoft Word 2010 (Beta)".
Rename this to something else and now rename your recently copied shortcut to Microsoft Word 2010 (Beta).
Do this for all the office programs,outlook,powepoint,excel.
This worked for me.
