why do my Office 07 icons keep disappearing in windows 7?

This has happened to me as well and was corrected by viewing the properties from the desktop folder. Once I clicked on the change icon button and canceled the action all the icons for the Office 2007 programs and files were restored, including the taskbar pins.
Reinstalling the programs would not fix the problem from happening again IMO, and not an appropriate solution.

I am running Windows 7 and just uninstalled Beta 2010 and installed the RTM of 2010. As soon as it started, I had the same issue with the icons. I had thought about copying the folders as suggested above but wanted to try the diagnostic route. Thankfully, I never made it that far. My initial install of RTM 2010 included the defaults (with the exception of SharePoint). When I realized that InfoPath was installed as part of it, I reran the installer and removed InfoPath using the installer. Once complete, all of my icons were fixed. I had tried previous to install and "repair" however that did not fix the problem. Perhaps the installer could be run to remove a component and then run the installer again to re-add it if you really needed it.
This worked for me. but i was not able to find the folder 90120000. So i copied all the folders from another machine.

Running the Office diagnostic tool picked up the missing icons as an error and rectified the issue. This is most probably a bug and for MS diagnostic tools to pick up on it - suggests it's already a known issue. Not sure why so many people would be getting such a simple issue though. That's up to Microsoft.
