My Surface Pro 4 Keyboard with Touch is no longer being recognized by my Surface Pro 3 after updating to 1803.
I have disconnected and reconnected dozens of times.
I have cleaned my connectors on both the Surface Pro and the Keyboard unit.
I have uninstalled the keyboard in Device Manager, as well as the mouse however the only things showing up there are HID compliant Mouse and Keyboard, nothing that says Surface or Type Cover.
I have hard reset the device several times (Volume Up and Power), also booting into UEFI/BIOS several times where the keyboard also does not work.
I registered my device with Microsoft to of course be told it is Out of Warranty.
I am in the process of downloading the Recovery Image from 2015 from a trustable 3rd party website since I cannot find any links to the recovery image on Microsoft's website. This will I think put me back in time to before the 1803 update as far as Windows is concerned, however I am not sure if that will fix my problem since it is not being recognized in the BIOS.
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

if you are in the UK write to them and quote section 46 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and ask them to repair or replace.
Guys, I have started questioning whether it is the UEFI/BIOS update that has caused this problem.
After reading about whatever everyone had to say, I found an older version of the Firmware. I manually installed it but type writter didnt bother to work even though the new version shows in device manager)
Then,
I downloaded the image of my surface, and re-did a full installation + removing all my files from it. Halfway before the format finished, I got a BIOS screen (different than the one we had already) and at the bottom of the screen it was the exact version I installed earlier. That means that the installation I did was success since I could see the earlier version outside windows.
Windows installation finished without any luck from the keyboard (fails to work both on windows and in bios).
I then downloaded an even earlier version of the bios, tried that one (without going back and re-do the format) without any success again.
My guess is whatever they write, it then becomes write-protected, in such a way that even older BIOS images don't overwrite. Or maybe older BIOS were not writing anything on that memory location so it is left intact. That would make sense if we consider the previous method someone posted that when you let the battery run completely off it works for a while.
I am planning to let the Surface run on Bios screen until Monday (3 days)and make sure the battery level goes as low as possible. (Running on bios minimize energy consumption hence will go super low before turn off).
Having a different firmware now, I hope that once the type-writter comes back, it will not go dead again.
Keep in mind that I have tried the "run flat" method, mentioned earlier, without any success at all.
If anyone has any idea to propose at the top of what I do, let me know.. it may be worth it trying it!
The strange think is that, when in device manager and disconnect/recconnect the typewritter, device manager seems to respond.. but then it doesnt work in BIOS, which is confusing.
It seems that microsoft has pulled a trick out of apple's book to force us upgrade (for those dont remember, apple was reducing the CPU power on their devices). At the bottom of the line, this surface was really good that after 5 years i didnt feel the need to change it. That means Microsoft loosing money.

Hi everyone, I powered up the sp3 today and checked again for updates. wow; excited. there is a driver update: Microsoft driver updated for Surface Type Cover Firmware Update. Salvation....so I downloaded it and then restarted the surface. Nothing, Nada. Really? update history shows successfully installed 2/6/2019.
now installing feature update to Win 10 ver 1809. we shall see if that makes any difference but I am not holding my breath.
Anyone else have success with the firmware update making their dead type cover functional again?
Okay so we know Microsoft has a know issue that has broken something in the 1803 update with the connection between dust cover keyboards and Surface 3's and 4's. I have been troubleshooting and resetting my surface repeatedly over the past two weeks along with visiting the MS store and speaking with coutless MS reps. on the phone. In addition, I've attempted to reload and reset using downloaded factory images for Win8 and Win10 and firmware from the current downloads available off the MS site. All attempts to correct the issue have been unsuccessful. My background is IT support and I run a small IT consulting company. So normally this is something I believe I should have been able to fix. However, it looks like I hit a roadblock as without the Firmware or update source code, I'm unable to diagnose the problem any further. The good news is I found a workaround for $50 that is viable solution for the issue. I believe MS will eventually fix the issue, but for the time being, I purchased a replica dust cover Bluetooth keyboard and touchpad off of Amazon to solve the problem. I have included a link below for anyone else having the same issue and hope this brings a little bit of sanity to your life.

with me happened the same on my surface pro 3, but to get worse no support in Brazil because microsoft does not sell it here.
