Emma
I saw your response to this issue last week and as I had a few minutes this morning I pulled together the threads that worked for me. It is all in the post but is lost due to multiple threads
See below (make sure you read to the end before starting) and good luck

I got it working in the end , kind of anyway .... I had to do the = battery drain to get it to function again , a link here on how to do it =
- you have to drain it down so that it cannot function anymore , at = initial startup you should see the white battery low icon , now attach = the cover and plug in the charger.=20

After that it worked , but just this week i turned it on and again , the = Type cover was not recognised , no drivers , not showing in devices ... = nothing. So I started to go through the whole thing again ... drain the = battery down , it was showing 7 hours battery life left with nothing = running .. so I fired up a video editing program to try and tire it out = .... well , I left it doing stuff and then suddenly out of the corner of = my eye I see the type cover light up !
completely random , I hadn't done anything ... just happened .... weird = !
so although it is working it is still completely unreliable , if I was = working and this happened , I would have to wait to drain that thing = right down .... which can take hours !
So , Definitely a ghost in the machine , perhaps an exorcism might work = !
Try the battery drain and see if that helps , it works for some , but = not for others=20

I tried your suggested repair and it did not work initially so I immediately disconnected the charger and let it drain down again - from only around 7-8%
When I tried the next time I was much more particular at following your precise instruction i.e. "at initial startup you should see the white = battery low icon , now attach the cover and plug in the charger"
I must say this was very halfheartedly because when I had tried before on several occasions it had not worked. Each time I had done the 3 actions but perhaps the cover had been attached before I turned on or I attached the charger first in order to get the surface to start - I had never considered the order important
SURPRISE, SURPRISE - SUCCESS!!!
This has now worked for 3 days without problem - long may it continue

As of today 17 December
This has now worked continuously since July even with a number of = updates
