Bit Locker Recovery Key Requested at Boot Time

Hi,

At the weekend our two Surface 2 devices got a firmware update installed. My Surface 2 updated and rebooted fine with no issues.

But my wife's Surface 2 (64GB model) asked for the Bitlocker Recovery key at boot after the update, and now every time it reboots. Although I have the key this is very poor end user experience.

Especially as I am trying to sell her the Surface 2 over an iPad.

Any assistance in this would be most welcome.

Hi,

Microsoft released an update for this today, for Surface 2 devices, as reflected in KB article 2921482.  Please check for Windows updates and install the latest updates.

Here's how to check for updates manually:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.   (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update. 

Step 3: Tap or click Check now. 

Step 4: If there are updates available, tap or click View details. 

Step 5: Tap or click to select the ones you want to install, and then tap or click Install.  You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.

    Yes I was able to proceed after I reset the device. But I still don't have a bitlocker recovery key so if this happens again I will have to reset it AGAIN. I have not yet found out how to get a bitlocker recovery key my account still says that I don't have one.

    FYI BitLocker is on by default and cannot be turned off for Windows RT. Refreshing and resetting is not a permanent fix for RT losing its key, so it would be nice to see a bugfix to,address this - not just a workaround

    Yea after posting I saw an article thag said it can't be turned off.

    Personally, I'm responsible enough with devices that I've never lost or had stolen a cell, laptop or tablet in the 16 years if had such devices...so a feature that only locks me out at random intervals is no benefit.

    It happens when fully charged, when on the charger, when less charged.

    The worst part is that I'll get a random reboot to the bitlocker screen when the surface is in my bag. The bitlocker screen doesn't go to sleep, so it drains the battery.

    Tony, bitlocker drive encryption is not an option in control panel. Please get back to us with a solution. I suffer random reboots that ask for bitlocker keys and also regular reboots sporadically require the key. I don't want to also have that available to use my device. Have been to windows store, they were unable to deactivate.

    I do not think bitlocker can be turn off on Windows rt devices. I will verify myself later. I personally would not and will not turn off bit locker... But I understand the frustration most are facing here... Are you letting the power drain? A few us us on the board are thinking this may have something to do with it...

    I am going to pass the information on this forum to another enthusiast forum with "connections"  for help later today.
