I am an engineering manager for a new adaptation of technology for the treatment of cancer. Proton Therapy. I purchased this from my own money as the book was ideal for walking the system with the tablet only, yet still having access to my corporate domain. I certainly am not going to waste time chasing a company to support it's product, nor would it aid in what I do. I have purchased a competitive product, though I did prefer my book.
This system is large enough that there are no backups for the 100 or so cancer patients we are treating at my 3 accelerators in the south (7 in the country and 13 in the world)

I've never left my book plugged in, and until this year, never had an issue. I am incredibly frustrated at the lack of ownership of what can be a rather incident. My issue is the delamination under the keyboard on the bottom of the base unit. Bulging is on both sides.
At the very least Microsoft could recommend safe ways to dispose of this 4,000$ brick. I am an engineer of several curriculums, and I have recommended our organization cease purchasing for our surface program, and they are complying. (I am a senior engineering manager in the US, and at least I have stemmed the impact to my organization.)
No response from Microsoft calls and the online links lead me to the 'care for your battery' link.
I have purchased almost every Microsoft hardware device up until now, however, this form of treatment will bring an end to patronization, at least from this customer or my corporation.
I've not seen this type of outright denial of ownership of a serious issue in 30 years of technology. A shame Microsoft is choosing an unethical path which directly affects their most loyal customer base (whom else will drop 4k$ on a device.) No one I know for sure.
