Surface Pro 4 Jul 2017 Update - Type Cover not working

I updated the latest update Jul 2017 and it bricks my type cover completely. Tried everthing, from reset, volume + and power, everthing including cleaning etc.

I just do not understand. When I did Apr 2017 update, it also half bricked it, but at least using volume+ and power helps, but now totally unusable.

If anyone come across, this, please help.

    Hi Barb,

May be you can give me some advise ..

I have the same issue like others with my Surface Pro 4 where suddenly my type cover not working when i turn on my surface. Already check a lot of forum, article, tube and go through this forum conversation and has tried: Power + volume up button, toggle type cover port on/off on bios, update the surface pro 4 tablet with latest update 21 September (if i'm not wrong), create recovery image and recover it from scratch and last i even buy a new type cover and its still not detected.

There are no light at all on both new and old type cover and on the device manager under Keyboard it only show HID Keyboard device and under Human Interface device there are no type cover device show on the list.

The rotation and touchscreen all beside the type cover is still good that's why at first i though it is only type cover(hardware failure) but when i buy a new one its the same. Unfortunately there are no Microsoft store in my country so i cannot ask them to check. Do you still have any advise what setting i can try..? beside buy a Bluetooth keyboard..

    Note.

    I'm using Windows 10 Pro Version 1703

    OS Build : 1506.13

    System UEFI  : 107.1741.768

    Thanks,

    Yusman

Microsoft has really not acknowledged an issue with typecovers. They know about

something being amiss with non US typecovers and have told their agents to offer

    the following workarounds:

    Workaround #1

    1.    Power+volume up to boot into UEFI settings.

    2.    Choose Devices.

    3.    Toggle Type Cover Port off and then on.

    Workaround #2

    1.    Check Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and ensure that Filter Keys

    is disabled.

    2.    Check BIOS and make sure Type Cover is enabled in Devices.

    3.    In Device Manager, click on the View menu > Show Hidden.

    4.    Under HID (Human Interface Devices), scroll down and find Surface Pro 4

Typecover Integration > right-click - Uninstall. (chose option to delete

    driver/software.)

    5.    In Device Manager, under Keyboard, if you do not see the type cover, no

need to do anything else. I; if you do see it, right-click, uninstall (check to

    remove software).

    6.    Shut down (hold shift for a clean shutdown).

    7.    Hold power and volume up for 30 seconds. The device will flash to EFI

and back until it eventually powers off fully.

    8.    Power on the device. Now the keyboard should work, and all the drivers

should be re-installed that we removed earlier.

I think your issue is different since for everyone else it doesn't work at all,

where yours stops working after a while. You can certainly try the Surface

Diagnostic Toolkit if you haven't already

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4037239/surface-fix-common-surface-problems-using-the-surface-diagnostic-toolk

If this doesn't work and you are in the US, you can go to a physical retail

Microsoft Store and they will assist and exchange if needed. Otherwise you

should contact support for an exchange

    Dear Barb

the problem is different but the outcome is the same.

When I uninstall the typecover (as suggested in previous posts), after a few seconds I receive this message: "the last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned... " (see figs below)

the connection is very clean and I have just reset everything and installed the updates, the fix etc.

    please advice!

    Hi Barb,

The new update for Surface Pro 4 Drivers and Firmware can be found on this link.

    Regards.

Which one do we use? I have SP4 Pro i5

The file on that link contains the most recent update for all versions of Surface Pro 4. You may install it if your Surface Pro 4 is not yet up to date.

I do wonder whether this is worth reporting to trading standards (in the UK).

Microsoft have forced the software update to my surface.  This has limited functionality / usability of the Microsoft hardware.  I'd go as far as saying the surface hardware / windows software is not fit for purpose.
