Surface Pro 4 Jul 2017 Update - Type Cover not working

I updated the latest update Jul 2017 and it bricks my type cover completely. Tried everthing, from reset, volume + and power, everthing including cleaning etc.

I just do not understand. When I did Apr 2017 update, it also half bricked it, but at least using volume+ and power helps, but now totally unusable.

If anyone come across, this, please help.

you can try using a downloadable recovery image

    https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/downloadablerecoveryimage

    • to wipe everything and reinstall. if this fails to resolve the issue, then you

need to contact Microsoft and arrange to exchange your hardware

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13948/global-customer-service-phone-numbers

    >>Surface type cover filter device is no longer in device manager.

I downloaded the recovery image (.zip), inserted a 16gb USB and created a recovery drive (uncheck the "back up system files to the recovery drive"), after it completed I copied the content of the zip-file to the USB (confirm that you want to replace everything).

After copy, I inserted the USB into my Surface Pro 4, turn it off, and when I turned it back on again I kept holding down the "Volume Down" button until the loading (spin/wheel/dots) appeared. Did a full recovery and now everything works fine.

Thank again to Barb Bowman for the links.

My type cover started working on Windows 10 Preview 19013.1122 slow ring.

The type cover suddenly stopped working in October 2018. I tried all the approaches in this forum and from other websites. Nothing worked including battery drain. The auto-rotation was not working either. I always saw its driver was installed successfully and it was connected. However, it was not working.

I installed the windows preview in the late spring 2019. Type cover was not working until recently I tested the cover last week, Suddenly it's back to work in Windows and UEFI. I tested it for rebooting, shutting down and booting, disconnecting and reconnecting, almost all the cases. It's just working perfectly as long time before. I don't know what happened - I didn't do anything else.

Hope my experience could help you who also suffered from this issue. Also so deeply disappointed by Microsoft service and their attitude of ignorance. I will NEVER buy any Microsoft computer in the future! Since Jan. 2019, I've switched to DELL Precision 5530 2-in-1, which is just working!

    Here is software info:

    • Device name: SP4

To the Microsoft community thank you for your assistance on this issue unfortunately we have tried everything is suggested and nothing works.

Your suggestion of buying a $599 replacement refurbish surface Pro 4 is unacceptable.  This issue was caused by Microsoft  and Microsoft could not fix  the issue they caused.

I was able to find a resolution for the problem simply by going to YouTube, normally this would be the first place for me to go to, but I figure I will follow protocol and contact Microsoft, I strongly suggests you guys look at some of these people on YouTube and try to hire them.  Thank you for the patient on understanding  my frustration I been dealing with this for 2 weeks now.

    >I went to this PC fair and a company was offering repair for this issue. The staff said that its a motherboard issue and it’ll cost two hundred plus Singapore dollars to repair. ?

    >

    >

    >

    >If its true, what caused this motherboard failure? ??

motherboards can't be replaced. nothing inside is really replaceable. even

Microsoft does not open these and replace parts.

Microsoft has made no comment at all on the cause of this issue or specified

    what the issue is technically.

do you have links to other threads on this? there are only two of you reporting

    this here in this thread.

if you have done a complete wipe everything, reinstall Windows from a

    downloadable recovery image

    https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/downloadablerecoveryimage

and still have this issue, you will need to exchange your SP4

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13948/global-customer-service-phone-numbers

(if you are in the US, the closest physical retail Microsoft Store can assist

    with the exchange.)

    >>Looks like so many people have the same problem
