Battery Drains While Shutdown

I have read many posts and made many attempts to correct this problem without any success.

I was traveling for 3 months and when I returned the battery was completely dead.

Also, each night since my return, the battery drains as much as 12% overnight while shutdown.

I have all MS updates but the problem continues.

Please advise.

    I've had this problem for a few weeks. My computer (surface pro 4 on Windows 10) can be fully charged and then shut down and the battery goes down to 89% when I turn on the computer. Battery drainage in use has also become much faster. Using browser and internet connection the battery goes down to 0% in 2 hours rather than 5+ hours.

    If you know of a reason that Windows design might make sense in that respect, please tell me.

    Hi, Barb.  I know you help lots of people on this forum.  So this might be helpful for you to know.  I shutdown my fully charged Surface Pro 4 in airplane mode. 18 hours later when I started it, it was at 85% power.  Assuming this is reproducible, it means that Windows drains the battery even when the device is in airplane mode. If you know of a reason that Windows design might make sense in that respect, please tell me.

    It has been my experience even when a Surface is totally shut down that there is
    some  battery drain over a "long period" like a month. How much drain there is
    over a month is not something I know as it would vary depending on the age and
    condition of the battery. But I have to think that these devices in Microsoft's
    inventory while waiting to be sold could have been there more than a month and
    kept some amount of charge.

    I suppose you could try the regedit and do a full shutdown and then reverse the
    regedit. I'd be curious as to the results. Can't give you any definitive
    "advice" on this one.

    Hi, Barb.  Do I understand your post of 2/16/18 to mean that even in airplane mode, Windows will drain the battery when the PC is shut down?  I agree the benefit of connected standby is worth the battery drain in ordinary life.  But one month every year my Surface is in a place with only limited solar power and no available connection to anything else.  I may not turn it on for a week or more.  But I need it to remain available, and there is no practical way to charge it.  So if I understand your post, my only alternative is to edit the register before I go there and then undo the register edit when I return.  Is that right? 

    Hi, the only thing that fixed my issue was having the surface replaced.
