Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    If you click Vertical in the Page Movement group on the View tab, that would turn off Side To Side, and the Vertical setting should be sticky. Are you saying that it is not?

    I am having the same exact issue

    I am on Surface Studio

    Windows 10 Pro

    Office 365 ProPlus

    My Word is defaulting to Side to Side view

    I tried editing the Normal.dotm file

    I tried the registry change

    I tried setting the zoom to 120%

    Nothing worked!

    There's obviously a glitch somewhere and I hope Microsoft can find it and fix it quickly

    Are there any other suggestions?

    Nope! Word itself still is defaulting to horizontal viewing. Moreover, saving the zoom setting misses the point (and, therefore, isn't a real solution).

    I'm somewhat adjusted to this issue on my Surface Studio...by using my Surface Pro 4 which doesn't exhibit the same behavior. lol.
