Word 2016 always open in Side to Side view, even after changing it to Vertical view.

Recently, my Word 2016 had defaulted to scrolling between document pages side-to-side rather than vertically. I keep changing (under the View tab) the "page movement" to vertical, but each time I re-open Word, it defaults to side-to-side (see picture).

I don't understand why the sudden change, nor why Word won't "save" the last setting I have it on. Is there anyway to change the default to vertical and keep it that way?

I had the same problem. You just need to add the key.

Exit out of Word.

In Regedit, find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word'

Add the key 'Last View', then in there add a D-Word 'WordViewStateUsePageStackArrangement', leave the value as the default (zero).

Restart Word.

Worked for me.

    I don't see that here, using Word 2016 (version 1709) as part of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus. The option I select stays selected.

    Thanks again, but it looks like we're just rehashing the comments from the beginning of this thread in April. Those of us affected have already verified our Word 2016 versions, etc. What we determined back then was that it was primarily happening to those of us using the Surface Studio. That was the case with the original poster and me, anyway.

    If you click Vertical in the Page Movement group on the View tab, that would turn off Side To Side, and the Vertical setting should be sticky. Are you saying that it is not?

    Yes, that's the whole point. The view always defaults to Side to Side. We understand that it can be manually changed to Vertical, but it remains an annoying extra step every time a document is opened or created.
