I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots.  Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

Surface | Surface Pro | USB-C

Happening to me too.  Twice today both plugged into power, and unplugged from power.  I am not expecting help from Microsoft though, the few times I ever find a representative they are as clueless as can be on what the Surface Pro is, let alone being intelligent enough to troubleshoot one.

I have noticed several major issues, some that seem to be hardware driven.

    • Random WiFi failures, where coming out of sleep the WiFi card has a failure and the system drivers won't work until you restart.  This looks like a quality issue with the WiFi cards or lazy driver development.
    • The SkyDrive never syncing issues they patched - still not syncing after 6 months, 1 patch and 5 support tickets (where to date they told me to reinstall skydive 3 times... on OS 8.1 no less - where you can't reinstall it)
    • Keyboards fall apart overtime.  Poor glue used in the Chinese sweatshops they made these 120 dollar keyboards in I think.
    • As for this error in the topic, it happens at any time (including Desktop apps and Metro apps).  Including on a fresh (blank 8.1) OS on my Surface Pro Gen 1, 128GB.

    Event Viewer reports:

    • Ntfs health check passed
    • File manager restarted
    • Power Failure kernel error (Critical)

Pulling up blue screen view now.  I already went through Xbox's because of poor quality and design issues with Microsoft.  not sure why I expected more from their tablets.  and certainly, like most of you, getting tired of always troubleshooting their issues for them.

Edit: no BSOD, so the device does a hard freeze too fast to generate a crash.

Edit 2:  Kernel power error was part of the boot up and recognition.  the error actually *seems* to be caused by the device entering sleep mode for no reason, while in use on a full battery.  and the sleep mode causes the equivalent of an unlogged kernel panic.  Reason?  who knows, W8.1 is proprietary - troubleshooting + solution needs to come from the manufacturer (if the care enough to even look into it).  This cause was only true per event viewer for some of my kernel power crashes, not all.

Random theory?  Could be the keyboard.

Given all the 8.1 issues I have had, I highly suspect m$ was intentionally lazy (or simply skipped) QA cycles for surface pro gen 1.  But they already had our cash, so what do they care.

Guessing, the root cause is either the 8.1 upgrade itself (I've had a lot of things go wonky... like IE11 constantly losing cookies randomly, losing auto-correct and passwords from auto-fill, losing all the tiles on the "New Tab" screen for the frequently visited sites, etc).... or it was the last firmware update.  Those two things happened close to each other time-wise, and I had no random restarts before them, and they've been CONSTANT since then... I think the longest I've gone is three days, and the most frequent has been four or five times in one day.

No idea what actually triggers it.  I've hibernated or put to sleep, and when I wake, I find it's restarted.  I've had it reboot just when I touched the screen... to scroll, or touch a link in a web page...

It's endlessly frustrating, I HAVE lost data, and it's annoying that Microsoft hasn't even acknowledged a problem when it's pretty clear it's wide-spread.  I mean, what percentage of people having the problem do you think are posting in this thread or the other similar one?

Might as well throw my hat in the group. Surface Pro 1, Windows 8.1. Random reboot issue. Sometimes it is right after I turn on the pro, other times after an hour just surfing the web. No viruses, no weird programs running, just using IE. I use this for school and my fear is that eventually this will make me lose work. Very annoying, so far no root cause found in my web searches.

Add me to the list of people experiencing this problem. 128GB Surface Pro 1 with type cover. It is restarting on me maybe once per day. It usually seems to happen while I am using OneNote or browsing. Most recently, it shut down at the precise moment I plugged in my headphones to the headphone jack while playing a game.  I also notice that it occasionally I will try to revive it from standby, only to find that it has restarted.

I am having this same issue. It is still very annoying, since all I am doing is using the internet explorer.
