Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots.  Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

Agreed. I've also been having this problem for a while.

It's ridiculous. This is my third surface pro 2 and I've had issues with all of them. This one is by far one of the most annoying. I've noticed it gets worse after updates - that's when I notice more restarts.

I've had it happen when bending the type cover back, but also just when moving or picking up the tablet. At times it's unusable. Once the darned thing restarted THREE times in a row  - it didn't even get past the Surface logo without doing it. Shame. It seems like with Surface, you always have to be weary of updates. *rolls eyes*

I contacted MS support about this a while back, they suggested I reset my pc completely using the recovery partition.

I did that about  a month a go. Since then only once my surface "magically" rebooted thus it seems to have worked

I'm surprised you did it, it would be a cold day in h... before I'd wipe, re-install and re-activate every piece of software...  especially when all signs are pointing to a hardware design fault.  Heck my Visual Studio (their own software) on the tablet can't be re-activated, its a single activation license that's garbage after use.

To be honest, if I had to go through all that trouble - I'd just get rid of the tablet and move to a non-Microsoft device using Windows 7 or earlier.  Something with better support and a hardware manufacturer that listens to the user-base with a less invasive and problematic OS.  It has been a problem for over a year now without anyone at M$ doing anything about it (this thread is a good example) so maybe it really *is* time to give up.

All that's left now is a bunch of people on a thread with good intentions.

I am also having this problem on my Surace Pro 2 and have been having it for quite some time. The reboot is severe enough that no memory.dmp is left behind, and no system log entry about the fault is present.

The problem seems to happen when the keyboard is moved toward the open or close position, or removed and re attached after it has become non-responsive after the computer has been left to sit for a while.

It seemed to happen less often with the touch cover 2 when compared to the type cover 2. It also seemed to happen less often after the MS store replaced my type cover, but it did re-appear after about a month.

The frequency of this problem is on the order of once a week, so it could be that these "fixes" are illusory.

I guess you could always take advantage of their trade-in program to upgrade to a Surface Pro 3. I got one and it's utterly fantastic. So much better than the old Surface Pro 1 and 2 that it's not even funny. Thinner (by far), lighter (by far), better battery life, runs cooler, better display, and it doesn't have any rebooting problem.  I'm quite happy now

No offense intended, I know you are trying to help.

But given the abysmal support and utter disinteterest from Microsoft, the absolute last thing I want to do is give them more money to resolve issues on their products. And trading a tablet that cost 1100 new for 200 bucks in change after dealing with that kind of hassle is completely not worth it. Not to mention migrating all my applications ... and I highly doubt there is a Microsoft store in all of Canada.

I just wish once that they wouldnt mess over early adopters. It seems every first and second gen hardware release from them is flawed by design and their motto generally seems to be to ignore users. It is annoying and consumers should be holding them accountable to support their own stuff imo.
