I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots. Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.
Anyone else experiencing this.?

I guess you could always take advantage of their trade-in program to upgrade to a Surface Pro 3. I got one and it's utterly fantastic. So much better than the old Surface Pro 1 and 2 that it's not even funny. Thinner (by far), lighter (by far), better battery life, runs cooler, better display, and it doesn't have any rebooting problem. I'm quite happy now.
Well, I think that I know the cause, but only a temporary cure.
...I did a Vol UP power on and that didn't help the reboots...I also cleaned the contacts back then, so went ahead and did that with alcohol. Didn't really help, but a week or so later, I used a pink eraser (also recommended) that has a sharp corner. The corner allows getting into the contacts on the Surface.

My current strategy of throwing sharp things at former Microsoft employees at my work has been making me feel better, but most likely isn't constructive.
Well, I think that I know the cause, but only a temporary cure.
A year or so ago, I was having a problem with the back lights on my Type 2 cover connected to a Surface 1.
In talking to tech support, they suggested cleaning the contacts between the cover and Surface by using alcohol with a swab. That didn't fix the problem, so the next suggestion was a hard power off, followed by a Vol UP power on. Still didn't fix the back lights, so eventually got a new keyboard under warranty.
But I noticed a significant decrease in the random reboots. I attributed it to a complete reset during the Power on restart. In hind sight, I believe that cleaning the contacts decreased the reboots.
Forward to a few weeks ago. My Surface was rebooting several times a day, mainly when the keyboard was being moved (folded or the whole tablet being put down). So I did a Vol UP power on and that didn't help the reboots.
Then I remembered that I also cleaned the contacts back then, so went ahead and did that with alcohol. Didn't really help, but a week or so later, I used a pink eraser (also recommended) that has a sharp corner. The corner allows getting into the contacts on the Surface.
Like night and day, my Surface has only rebooted once (in 2 weeks) since then.
So I think that dirty contacts cause some sort of electrical anomaly when the keyboard gets moved or twisted relative to the Surface that causes the reboot.

thats sad. it started happening again sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. i've warned everyone I know about the dangers of Microsoft hardware, how fractured the support is, and how frustrating the Surface is - bordering on unusable - because you cant rely on it for anything.
its sad to see the same issue with the Dell, I had hoped it wasnt an inherent flaw in 8.1. but given the messy way they now approach drivers I shouldnt be too surprised
