I've already posted this on another thread (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro-surfhardware/surface-pro-shuts-down-randomly/4d645dfb-dc1c-4d92-9a3f-e1df1762cdc8) very similar to this, but perhaps I might get some more luck here - please
see below - thanks! Mario.
Hi all.
I have just spent the last 30 minutes carefully going through this thread in its entirety and find that this does seem to be the same problem being had by all, myself included. My gut feeling has always been that there's a hardware issue, and perhaps it was
to do with the connection to the Touchtype keyboard, but my views on this are changing now to it being a hardware issue with the Surface Pro itself, sadly... It's a superb tablet - but if there are hardware issues - then the problem will not magically go
away.
My warranty expires in a few days and I have already been in contact with the Microsoft Support Guys across the water in Dublin about this just 2.5 hours or so ago, and they are willing to exchange, but I am worried that an exchange will not solve the issue
and the replacement unit only comes with a 90-day warranty and not a whole year this time.
On about three occasions in the first 46 weeks or so of owning the Surface Pro with the Touchtype Keyboard attached, the Surface Pro would come back up from what would seem like a power loss having completely lost everything you were working on (sometimes losing
the recovery files also like they were being stopped from writing to the internal SSD somehow) and with all the applications/programs hard closed/killed instantly - twice was following a successful (or what seemed to be successful) hibernation (all power keys
and default power-off settings are set for hibernate, and never for power off) whilte moving it around and packing it into its case, and once was when I tried using the surface on my lap and the keyboard started flexing slightly and that caused it to spontaneously
reboot. We occasionally do a full restart manually so it doesn't go months on hibernations alone, all Windows Updates are automatically installed and it tells us when it is or has rebooted as a result of Windows Updates, plus earlier today (around nine hours
ago) I did an additional manual Windows Update and there I selected all 830MB+ of important and optional updates so there's nothing outstanding.
However, my partner has been using it a bit for work in this time since her netbook and my old laptop have both given up the ghost, and this has happened on at least three or four occasions to her resulting in her losing everything she has been working on -
everything that was open, every file, all the tabs in the web browsers (except for Firefox and Chrome), and anything in any applications that she was working on. This has been more recently, in the last six weeks or so, the rebooting or dieing seems to be
becoming more common (but maybe it's because the tablet is being used more for interactive means rather than as a media player type device for when I'm on the road as I travel a lot for work), and mostly with the Touchtype keyboard attached. On perhaps two
occasions now though, she thinks the same thing as happened without the keyboard being attached: once with nothing at all physically connected to the Surface Pro, and once maybe tonight with an old Microsoft Internet Pro Keyboard attached into the USB port
of the Surface via a USB-3 three-port plus LAN hub.
If anyone does have anything non-standard to suggest that we can try or test in the next 24-40 hours or so before Microsoft call me back Thursday evening (UK time), then this would be greatly appreciated - ditto from the Microsoft folks that monitor this forum...?
Thanks in advance...
Mario.
