Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

My Surface Pro 2 with a Type Cover 2 also sometimes reboots when either moving the Surface with the cover attached OR when removing the cover from the Surface.

I tried to post the error messages, but if you look at the log, there is no log for the exact point where it reboots, which it did at 8:49:10 PM...

The reboots don't happen every time, but it is very annoying when it does. Typically, when I notice it happen, I am either running Visual Studio Express 2013, or running a Win 8 game such as TapTiles, Minesweeper, Fruit Ninja, etc.

I might add, was running off the battery, not plugged in, and had around 50% battery remaining when it happened.

I've had three reboots today. I was getting one every other day over the last couple of weeks but I was on the move a lot today and I would agree with earlier posters that this seems to be something about moving folding back the touch cover. This has definitely degraded over the last few weeks (and is becoming really annoying) and the reliability monitor shows the reboot frequency.

I have the settings as per above but haven't seen a MEMORY.DMP file appear (I've checked hidden/OS files as well). I will double check next time it occurs. Is there anything else we can be doing to capture useful information?

Being the OP of this Thread, I would like to say that I have not had anymore issues, however I do have a case on it  that I bought as soon as I received my  replacement, so normally I just remove the keyboard when I want to use it as a tablet. I haven't flipped it behind and brought it back as I once did.  I may try using it just with the Type Cover and the device to see how it reacts and if so submit my dump file.

I want a resolution just as well as everyone else.

I am highly looking into a Surface Pro 3 but my gut this time tells me to wait to see how everyone else does with them first and not be one of the first Buyers as I was back in Feb 2013 for a Surface Pro 1.

We'd like to capture Kernel Dump files and Event Viewer Logs from when the Surface randomly restarts.

To enable Kernel-Mode Dump Files, please do the following:

1. Go to %SystemRoot% which is usually C:\Windows and delete any Memory.dmp files that currently exist.
2. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System.
3. Click on Advanced System Settings
4. Go to the Advanced Tab if it does not automatically go there
5. Click on Settingsunder Startup and Recovery,
6. The settings in the window should be:

When the Surface randomly restarts, please collect the Dump file, and Event Viewer data (below) add it to OneDrive, then post the link for us please.

For Event Viewer, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

1. Go to Windows Logs > System
2. Find the error with Kernel-Power that would relate to the time in which the Surface restarted.
3. Select the set of errors that relates to the error
4. In the right hand side under Actions, select Save All Events As

This will greatly assist us in finding out what is happening.

II would not call it a grand failure, I love my Surface. It is a real computer in the size of a tablet and it can deliver what I need.  If not for the few things like the reboots and keyboard locking when CTRL or SHT pressed for a few seconds, I would be quite happy.

But we need Microsoft to address these issues, we need to see action, not just promises. Microsoft is big enough to handle this quickly, and they cannot afford to ignore us for long, or it will be a real failure when many of us will voice our dissatisfaction in multiple sites.

That's good for you.  I consider the entire 8.1 experience + Surface a grand ongoing failure.

I just stopped by to post that I had another reboot again in the middle of working.  Everytime it happens I plan to stop on here and remind Microsoft that I hate them so much.
