Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots.  Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

II would not call it a grand failure, I love my Surface. It is a real computer in the size of a tablet and it can deliver what I need.  If not for the few things like the reboots and keyboard locking when CTRL or SHT pressed for a few seconds, I would be quite happy.

But we need Microsoft to address these issues, we need to see action, not just promises. Microsoft is big enough to handle this quickly, and they cannot afford to ignore us for long, or it will be a real failure when many of us will voice our dissatisfaction in multiple sites.

Have they fixed the problem yet?  I've had three more in three days.  I'm getting tired of redoing work because a tablet or OS cant stay running on its own...  Another grand failure with Microsoft giving us the finger after taking our money?

They need to step out of the hardware business and leave it to companies that care.

I've got the same problem: Surface Pro 1 and Type Cover 1

    • random rebooots (error log says Critical kernel power)
    • random cold start ups (Surface Pro 1 boots up after full shutdown with Type Cover 1 attached)

I have reinstalled the Windows 8 software several times (complete reinstallation with total data loss) then re downloaded and installed windows 8.1 and all of the updates. And I'm still getting random shutdowns, reboots, and (fire risk) random startups. There is no correlation with the application being used. The only commonality is that the Type Cover 1 is attached, being used, or being attached/removed.

My impression is that the Type Covers (or their power-and-data pins) are causing a short-circuit power surge. I never have any issues when using the on-screen keyboards or the Bluetooth Wedge keyboard.

Looking at the update releases, Microsoft have been attempting to resolve these Type Cover issues for over a year. What is the answer?!!!

I lost good amount of work because of these spontaneous reboots. Microsoft should do a recall and fix the problem.

Sounds very similar to my problems. Almost never had a reboot until i installed my Surface Power Cover (Ive got the Surface Pro 1). Now it reboots randomly when i move it etc.

    Any updates to your situation?
