Surface Pro 1 on Windows 8.1 reboots when Type Cover 2 is removed

I just noticed this recently but sometimes I get a Random reboot not even doing anything particular. I also noticed twice that when I attached my Type Cover 2 it reboots.  Example I attached it and the SURFACE logo shows and it boots up.

Anyone else experiencing this.?

My advice is to try it. If more then one person can reproduce the issue then we have a confirmed issue and something Microsoft can diagnose.

    1. Drain the battery to say 30%
    2. Unplug type 2 cover
    3. Plugin type 2 cover

    Surface should power down immediately.

Try power up surface by pressing power button (without power plugged in). It shouldn't work.

    Plug power in.

Power up surface by pressing power button.

    It should work.

There may be differences with different models and keyboards. I can only go by what I use (surface pro 2 and type 2 cover).

I tried out different Surface Pros with different Touch Covers in a store. Every device had the problem and every device was plugged in.

I would consider it both a Hardware and a software issue. I went back and completeley removed and reinstalled my Surface. I had the problem with 8.0 AND 8.1. However, the problem seemed worse, as soon as I installed the fw-update (It only offered me the January-update).

I now have a 8.1-System without the Firmware-update and I haven't got as many reboots as before.

Perhaps it is indeed a hardware issue, which is amplified by a slightly worse Firmware code?

    Greetings,

Is anyone still experiencing the issue with their Surface Pro randomly restarting, or restarting when connecting a cover?

    Hi Steven,

I am having this problem as well. The symptom is complete loss of power when you disconnect and reconnect type 2 cover or if you wiggle type 2 cover connection.

I am certain this issue is related to POWER level of surface. I happen to have a surface pro 2. When this issue occurs the following happens:

    1. If power cable is unplugged you cannot power up the surface by pressing power button. You have to press power button and volume up button
    2. If after this issue occurs you plug power cable in then surface will start by just pressing power button

I have noticed this issue occurs when:

    1. Surface is running on battery
    2. Surface has less than 50% power

The problem with this issue is it results in DATA LOSS and is completely unacceptable for a business tablet.

I suggest anyone reading this make as much noise as possible as I think this is not a SOFTWARE issue. SOFTWARE does not cause a device to POWER DOWN immediately - software bugs cause BLUE SCREENS of DEATH!

This is a hardware issue that is probably exacerbated by the type cover due to power draw. I would go as far as to say this issue may require a PRODUCT RECALL.

Please advise what Microsoft is doing about this officially.

    Peter

This is naive to say that Software issues always / only cause BSOD's.  Hardware issues also cause BSOD's  Many issues with RAM cause the BSOD.

Plus software issues can exist and a BSOD is not produced.

Good point but not relevant to resolving this issue. Software issues should not cause immediate POWER LOSS. Particularly when it is induced by mechanics (i.e. contact pins on keyboard).

I don't see how it's a hardware issue... as I was having the exact same problem with my Surface Pro and Type keyboard.  However after resetting the keys as mentioned in one of my previous posts I've not had the issue ever since.

It's more likely to be a driver issue when it deals with the removal of the keyboard.  Plus I had random restarted while just using the device, without the keyboard.

Not to mention the fact that the issues started after I had upgrade to Windows 8.1.

All of the above points to a software issue....

The random restarting from my understanding was only being reported on Surface Pro devices after upgrading to Windows 8.1 and not before.  If it was a hardware issue the restarting would have been evident on Windows 8 before they rolled the update out via the Store.
