i5/256 Surface Pro 4 overheats and battery drains while 'sleeping'

My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.

(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

    My 3rd SP4 did pretty well for the first couple of days, but after started setting up apps and one drive, the symptoms came back - fan continuously cranking, overheating and battery drainage.

    The support tech said they will replace with yet another one! They won't refund though since it is past 30 days, but it is under warranty for replacement. They did not clarify how they would handle if 4th one has the same problem.

    It has been a very sour experience.

    Check in the history of your updates if you have the 5/24/2016 update where they state:

    Microsoft driver update for Surface Embedded Controller Firmware Surface Embedded Controller Firmware <br><br><ul><br><li>v103.1158.256.0 adjustments to system thermal tuning and optimizes battery utilization in connected standby and in low battery scenario.</li></ul>
    Microsoft driver update for Surface Management Engine Surface Management Engine<br><br><ul><br><li>v11.0.11.1006 improves system stability resuming from sleep or hibernation and increased reliability of touch and pen capabilities.</li></ul>

    (Wow, this cut/paste thing is impressive sometimes!)

    Go to Settings > Updates & Security > Advanced options > View your update history.

    In my case the system seems to be up-to-date, with updates dating 5/28th, but there is no sign of the 5/24th system update! -- which opens up a whole new thread of discussions...

    I'll try to get the update and keep you posted, since the hot standby issues still exist here.

    I had this overheating problem...finally decided to return and got a new unit couple of days back. My old device was within warranty period.

    Anyway, the new device seems to have no issue so far. Best wishes! If anything changes, I will post it.

    I just checked for updates.

    "my device is up to date as of 21:10 today"

    I installed the updates that's announced in this thread.

    I'm running 14342 build, windows insider, slow ring.

    I know that I really can't expect stability from preview builds, but the build that shipped with the device was even worse stability wise.

    My sp4 i5 is still behaving as described in this thread.

    It overheats and uses my battery in my bag.

    I've disabled windows hello, but the sleepmode still seems broken.

    I've run driver verifier, but got stuck in bootloop, no data to analyse from that session.

    I've tried to download intel 520 generic drivers (non whql, but newer) but that didn't help either.

    At work I'm on a mission to try to get all the ipad-users to switch back to a computer again, but the stability of this device is making my mission very hard.  It just doesn't "just work". :(

    I love the idea of this device, but I've had more problem in the last six week since i bought it, than I had in three years with my Lenovo X1 Carbon.  (using insider builds and fiddling around with setting and features with about the same intensity as on this device).

    Should i try to get a hardware replacement? Would that solve my problems?

    I felt so hopeful the 24th when I discovered that a load of driver upgrades was published on WUS, but unfortunately it didn't help.

    Sorry about the mix of constructive criticism and rant nature of this post, but it desrcibes the frustration I'm feeling quite well.
