My SP4 gets very hot and drains the battery very fast even though it is asleep. I found it very hot in its sleeve and down to 28% earlier today. Found it dead later in the afternoon. This is one of MANY issues this device has.
(My SP4 is not part of the insider program)

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.
We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.
To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

I just bought a brand new Surface Pro 4 i5 and have the same issues.
Microsoft confirmed I have the latest drivers.
If I just close the screen at night, the device stays slightly warm and is clearly not idle. Overnight, I am losing about 30% battery
I ran sleepstudy and the CPU/GPU are not going to sleep and are burning power.
Even while running I am watching the battery drain 1% every 2-3 minutes.
This is the most terrible device experience I have ever had. They need to rake the engineers over the coals for this one. This is a constrained problem since you are dealing with a closed system.
I am going to reinstall the Surface drivers (bundled MSI) and see if that helps. Otherwise, this turd is going back.

That is exactly what I have found! Manually turning off seems to be working properly for me (sometimes though it does not wake up and I have to press the button a few times to wake it up).
I got yesterday a UEFI update that was supposed to fix standby related issues. Issue still remains...
As far as I can tell, by manually turning off the screen by shortly hitting the power button before closing the "lid" seems to avoid the issue. I have tried been consistent with this behavior and can't recall problems since then. Also, detaching/attaching the power cord activates the screen hence Windows Hello. Make sure you always manually turn off the screen before storing the Surface.
I find it hard to believe it's a hardware issue though I'm obviously not a Microsoft engineer. Still, great if you can get a replacement, I'm starting to consider that option despite the burden of going through fresh installs and stuff.
It's annoying to see such an issue with an "intelligent" wake up system in 2016... Come on guys, you can do it!
I got my October Surface exchanged two weeks ago and so far nor more issues with battery and standby
