Surface Pro 4 battery drain while OFF

I have a HUGE battery drain while power off (not hibernating)  at least 5-10 percent per day.   I windows updates done.   I used to think it was because of the keyboard being attached. but I have switched to a Brydge Keyboard.  Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?

Another solution I've found is to shut down the computer the old way - regular shutdown instead of hybrid shutdown.

You can use this shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 3 /c "Full Shutdown"

  • shutdown.exe can execute the various sleed/hibernate commands, including the regular shutdown.
  • /s means "shutdown". If we shutdown the normal way, it is a hybrid shutdown (/hybrid)
  • /t 3 means after 3 seconds. If you skip this it's 30 seconds by default.
  • /c "Full shutdown" is a simple comment that will appear in various places as the reason for your shutdown.

Keep in mind it takes a little longer to shutdown this way, and it takes a little longer to start afterwards, but I think the computer doesn't keep some systems active, thus you should see almost no battery drain, even for prolonged times.

That is a good question because the screen will be off.  Before shutting down and all programs are closed, you can do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager and look at the processes that are still running at that moment and you may find 'something' but doubtful.

The power sub-system could also have a defect causing that as well and not actually shutting off the machine when it is supposed to be off.

The task manager may give you a clue when all programs are shut down.  If you can't find anything listed, it is possible you may need to contact customer support to get the machine swapped out.

    Bit of a newbie here, so sorry if this sounds simplistic.

    Ive had intermittent problems with drain while device powered off. most recent was two weeks ago, used my surface on sunday, turned it off with around 60% remaining, used it on the Wednesday, 3 days later, 20% left.

    I followed one previous suggestion of letting the device completely run out of charge while on, so i used it on full brightness with as many apps and videos playing as i could. It shut itself of at 4%, i left it for around an hour, plugged it and charged it overnight. Not had a problem since!

    I did have some Microsoft tech support for a related battery issue in Jan, before the above happened, they made sure i'd got the correct drivers for my build, which in my attempt to solve the other issue, i had downloaded all of them and installed them all, which was like putting multiple personalities in to one brain! So my only final piece of advice is make sure you have the correct drivers/firmware for your build, don't do a me.

    Hope it helps, you've all unknowing helped me over the past few weeks.

    Mike, the problem you originally posted is totally normal for your system.  A system using Modern Standby will use 1% to 2% per hour while the system is in Connected or Disconnected Standby.  The only way to stop that is to set it to go into hibernation or shut it down.

    I do not know if the Fall build update caused any problems for the Surface products as it did for some Dell systems, but you should be able to shut the system down normally from the Start Menu.  It should not be necessary to run a special command to do so.

    Panthro99 is seeing an 80% battery drop in just a few hours.  The problem with understanding the situation with Panthro99 is the Battery Report is a single reading of the battery and does not show trends.  I don't trust what the battery report says and in Panthro99's case, we do not know when the AC power was removed from the system...  Also, the term "suspended" may not mean shutdown, but possibly hibernation.

    Looking at a SleepStudy and a Battery Report together is far more useful.  I the case of Panthro99, perhaps using the Performance analyzer would be of benefit.

    The video below doesn't actually address battery drain while shutdown, but if the battery is draining it should also show up when the system is in hibernation, which is how these systems should be set to do after an hour or two.
