Surface Pro 4 battery drain while OFF

I have a HUGE battery drain while power off (not hibernating)  at least 5-10 percent per day.   I windows updates done.   I used to think it was because of the keyboard being attached. but I have switched to a Brydge Keyboard.  Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?

Another solution I've found is to shut down the computer the old way - regular shutdown instead of hybrid shutdown.

You can use this shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 3 /c "Full Shutdown"

  • shutdown.exe can execute the various sleed/hibernate commands, including the regular shutdown.
  • /s means "shutdown". If we shutdown the normal way, it is a hybrid shutdown (/hybrid)
  • /t 3 means after 3 seconds. If you skip this it's 30 seconds by default.
  • /c "Full shutdown" is a simple comment that will appear in various places as the reason for your shutdown.

Keep in mind it takes a little longer to shutdown this way, and it takes a little longer to start afterwards, but I think the computer doesn't keep some systems active, thus you should see almost no battery drain, even for prolonged times.

That is a good question because the screen will be off.  Before shutting down and all programs are closed, you can do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager and look at the processes that are still running at that moment and you may find 'something' but doubtful.

The power sub-system could also have a defect causing that as well and not actually shutting off the machine when it is supposed to be off.

The task manager may give you a clue when all programs are shut down.  If you can't find anything listed, it is possible you may need to contact customer support to get the machine swapped out.

    Regarding putting the SP4 into hibernation, I am indeed doing that manually on purpose.  When I'm done using the unit, I put it in hibernation (I don't leave it on to go into hibernation on its own).  I also disabled modern standby partly because of not wanting it and partly because of troubleshooting this battery drainage issue after searching through this thread and other web sites (to see if it was playing a role in this issue).  So something else has to be going on that is playing a role in the battery drainage.

    First of all, Jeff, your Surface Pro 4 is not showing any Modern Standby entries where a prior listing does show it.  I assume you are manually putting the system in hibernation which you do not need to do.

    Your chart shows a 3%, 1% and a 1 minute 33 second active time.  So 5% seems to be inline with normal operations.  We do not know if you brought the system out of hibernation for these operations or it happened on it own.

    I set my system, as the video suggests, to go into hibernation after 60 minutes.  My system uses 1-2% power until it is dozed to hibernation where it uses none.  I probably need to confirm usage by comparing to actual battery level but even that the system has used some power before I can check the current battery level.

    A 5% discharge in 12 hours is quite a bit different from 5% in 7 days.  We should be aware there may be two different situations being discussed in this one thread.

    Otherwise, what does your sleep study say?  If you attach a picture, please include the entire time period or several time periods so we can see how the system is behaving.

    The 1709 build upgrade may have changed how you system behaves when hibernation is involved.

    I got my 5% discharging in 7 days .. in a complete shutdown state (cmd line) ot in a hibernate state.

    My others computers (others brands) still got 100% after 7 days in same condition (fresh install and drivers without anything else
