Surface Pro 4 battery drain while OFF

I have a HUGE battery drain while power off (not hibernating)  at least 5-10 percent per day.   I windows updates done.   I used to think it was because of the keyboard being attached. but I have switched to a Brydge Keyboard.  Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix?

Another solution I've found is to shut down the computer the old way - regular shutdown instead of hybrid shutdown.

You can use this shortcut:

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 3 /c "Full Shutdown"

  • shutdown.exe can execute the various sleed/hibernate commands, including the regular shutdown.
  • /s means "shutdown". If we shutdown the normal way, it is a hybrid shutdown (/hybrid)
  • /t 3 means after 3 seconds. If you skip this it's 30 seconds by default.
  • /c "Full shutdown" is a simple comment that will appear in various places as the reason for your shutdown.

Keep in mind it takes a little longer to shutdown this way, and it takes a little longer to start afterwards, but I think the computer doesn't keep some systems active, thus you should see almost no battery drain, even for prolonged times.

That is a good question because the screen will be off.  Before shutting down and all programs are closed, you can do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the task manager and look at the processes that are still running at that moment and you may find 'something' but doubtful.

The power sub-system could also have a defect causing that as well and not actually shutting off the machine when it is supposed to be off.

The task manager may give you a clue when all programs are shut down.  If you can't find anything listed, it is possible you may need to contact customer support to get the machine swapped out.

    For over a month now, I've been keeping an eye on this thread because I have this very same issue with my Surface Pro 4 of the battery drainage occurring while the unit is off (not in sleep or suspend mode but off).  This issue started happening months ago with my unit, and I don't know what update from Microsoft caused this to happen because this discharge wasn't occurring with my unit for roughly a year-and-a-half.  I was hoping that the firmware update released last month by Microsoft would address this issue with my Surface Pro 4, but it didn't.  I tried the various recommended fixes that have been posted throughout this thread, and none of them fixed this issue for me.  In light of the many other people that also have reported this same issue, I'm extremely upset at Microsoft's lack of proactive support and final resolution of this issue.  I bought the original Surface Pro when it came out, and the Surface Pro 4 is the second unit from Microsoft that I have owned (now for nearly 2 years).  In light of Microsoft's lack of proactive support on this issue, if Microsoft chooses to continue to release newer Surface Pro units like the one they released last year, I have no intention to buy another one in the future until they demonstrate proactive support of their prior units, including the Surface Pro 4, and that includes a resolution to this power drainage issue.  I'm very unhappy and disappointed with Microsoft.

    Just to update you guys, I've also experienced battery drain problems while device is off. I didn't want to have my device replaced at first because I was afraid it's going to be very difficult and might have the same problem or worse (I'm really skeptical since they are not replacing us with NEW ones, instead, they are refurbished device). But after a few months, my device won't turn on at all and I am left without any options.

    So finally had to have it replaced. Got my replacement device and I commend their support team for taking care of the logistics very well. The replacement device doesn't seem to experience the battery drain while device is off. So far so good. But what I did notice is there seems to be an obvious screen leak at the bottom of the screen which is really, really annoying. I don't even understand how their tech guys could miss such an obvious defect and still ship such a device to me. I expected better! Anyway, it's really difficult for me to replace my device since I still had to ship my device to another country (since the country I'm in does not support the surface pro). Guess I have to live with my decision of buying the surface pro in the first place.
