Surface Book 3 Nvidia Graphics card disappears after updates.

Having been assigned a Surface Book Pro 3 (the most advanced model with the Quadro RTX 3000 on board, 32 GB system memory, 1TB SSD), I should imagine working a relative powerhouse of a machine - aside from the rather sparse onboard memory - resulting in smoothly working accross the board.

That, alas, hasn't been the case at all.

Working a 3 monitor setup (1x32"4K, 1x 24" 1920x1200, 1x Surface Book Pro-screen), has been sort of an ordeal up till now.

The system constantly slows down (3 monitors addressed by the onboard Iris graphics card, and the Quadro hardly/if ever being properly used) slowing the system down to virtually unusable.

Every time I (try to) use Adobe Photoshop I have to check whether the Quadro card is even engaged at all - if not, restart (again). Our ICT department has taken this machine in time after time, sometimes resulting in a couple of days more or less 'normal'performance. And every time a Windows update was installed, it's back to 'extremely slow performance'.

This should never be an issue with a system such as this. And I'm not even pushing the boundaries with large Photoshop files, or Adobe Première editing, just basic tasks in Adobe CC - which is a damn shame, as I'm a graphic designer who needs to do just that, advanced tasks with a powerful machine.

And don't even get me started on using MS Teams - I might as well not even bother trying to work collectively or share a screen with colleagues, it just doesn't work at all. The system slows down to less than usable, with my cursor jumping all over the place, and texts appearing on screen after more than a minute of 'nothing'. We work remotely, via VPN - not by choice, but because that's just the current state of affairs.

This complete lack of any basic performance is totally unacceptable.

God why can't Microsoft give us any help with this problem. It's been an issue for months now and still no fix. I've tried everything that I've read on forums and still nothing works. We've all paid hard earned money for a piece of hardware and it's not even functioning as it should... Please Microsoft resolve the issue already... It's ridiculous.

Hi Andrew, yes that is much clearer, sorry.

I too had problems after one of the bigger windows updates, I think I eventually solved it by reinstalling the entire 'Surface' software extension (from the Microsoft support site) and then reinstalling the latest NVidia drivers using GeForce Experience.  Yep, that was my workaround, and it is not foolproof, and yes sometimes the NVidia does not engage when I start up something like Fallout 4 and I have to restart the whole machine.  Detaching - that is where my real problems come in.  I do LOVE the Book and its tablet abilities (backwards is brilliant) but this trick is its fatal flaw.

After doing a check on todays video card prices - YIKES!  What is up with that?

yes, I am talking about the Surface Book 3 as well.  It is my main system as my old Desktop is 10 years old, and so the price of video cards is a factor.  $700-800 for a 4-year old video card is not pretty cheap.  It was late and I didn't not fully explain my reason for mentioning Video Card prices, which is that the SB3 is very annoying to use with this issue, but I can't send it in to MS and be without it for 2+ weeks.  usually more than 4 weeks from what I have read recently.  

My dGPU will disapear even when attached.  detaching and reataching does bring it back, as well as doing a "Scan for hardware changes" in the Device Manager.  It did not have this problem until a firmware update in Feb as I stated before and it causes many programs to crash.  My Surface Book with Performance Base never had an issue like this, and I used it as my main gaming system for 4 years.

We are talking about the Surface Book 3 here with its innovative party trick of splitting in two and acting as a tablet.

I don't see how your post relates. If you have a problem with your desktop graphics card in your tower and don't want to replace it (a GTX1660 is pretty cheap these days) that is a completely different issue.

Yes that is an excellent suggestion for others with an issue.  I already have the drivers from NVidia and keep them updated. Previously that in itself was an issue when they clashed with a Windows update and made the NVidia card unusable for several months.  These days the 'lost video card' problem is less prominent BUT that is because I rarely ever split the device in fear of the tablet freezing and needing a restart within 30 minutes, or having to play silly buggers to get the NVidia card to work again.

And to Microsoft:
Shame on you, not a single reply to this ever growing thread about a problem with your flagship device, it's like you don't care about your community, your devices, or your once loyal customers.
