I bought the Surface book 3 a few weeks ago. It just installed some updates and now my Nvidia card has disappeared from the device manger.
It was working properly before the updates go installed so now I am suspecting it's something to do with the windows updates. My surface book hasn't received the latest 2004 windows update yet. I have already gone through the Nvidia driver experience app to manual install the graphics card driver but it says it can't detect any graphics card. I am pretty sure a brand new 3grand machine will not be equipped with a faulty graphics card, because that will be stupid. Will be contacting MS soon. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem.

I use the latest driver from NVidia. and I didn't have this issue until the firmware patch back in Feb. It fixed some other issues I was having, but this new issue is almost worse.
And with the video card shortage I don't have the option of just building a new gaming desktop so I am pretty much unable to play most of the games I own.

Both myself and a friend were having this same issue with Surface Book 3 Nvidia Graphics card (driver) loss. We both tried various fixes mentioned here and some worked but only transitorily. Finally, using a third party driver updater... I discovered that the Nvidia driver ...Microsoft still had on the laptop after all the Windows and System Updates were complete .....was still ***** 6 months older***** than the most (current driver version) on the Nvidia website. Both of us updated to the latest Nvidia driver.. and this completely solved all problems.
Perhaps a mutual sharing of updates by Microsoft and Nvidia would be in order.

I agree. I am getting very tired of this issue. Some games can handle losing the dGPU while running and a "Scan for Hardware Changes" in the device manager brings it back. But others games cannot. There are days I feel like I wasted a lot of money on this thing.
I think everyone is missing the point. This should NEVER happen. If my desktop simply just decided to detach the graphics card and then I had to reboot it just to get the video back would infuriate me. However, because we happen to have the main intel GPU to fall back on we merely accept the behavior and go through whatever "fix" we have become accustomed to in order to keep working is just crazy.
The more I hear of it I am beginning to believe it has something to do with the connections from the NVidia GPU. I don't seem to have the issue as often if there isn't an external monitor connected to my machine. The problem is that to prove it you have to take apart the bottom section. Unfortunately that means you have most likely destroyed your machine since there is no way to take it apart without damaging the case.
Regardless, this is an abysmal design flaw and I wonder if Microsoft will EVER admit and fix it.
For some reason it seems to be degenerative for me. I used to be able to play some games and not others, but now any game that uses the nvidia hangs mid-load, when I get the 'detached' sound. I can scan to find it again, but it just happens again. I'm crossing my fingers that when they fix the screen blackouts it fixes this as well. A little naive perhaps. I'll give it a little bit longer and just send it for a replacement, but I'd rather not.
