I think everyone is missing the point. This should NEVER happen. If my desktop simply just decided to detach the graphics card and then I had to reboot it just to get the video back would infuriate me. However, because we happen to have the main intel GPU to fall back on we merely accept the behavior and go through whatever "fix" we have become accustomed to in order to keep working is just crazy.
The more I hear of it I am beginning to believe it has something to do with the connections from the NVidia GPU. I don't seem to have the issue as often if there isn't an external monitor connected to my machine. The problem is that to prove it you have to take apart the bottom section. Unfortunately that means you have most likely destroyed your machine since there is no way to take it apart without damaging the case.
Regardless, this is an abysmal design flaw and I wonder if Microsoft will EVER admit and fix it.
