Same here. I updated last night, closed the SB and this morning found it had crashed and restarted. I too am starting to think it might be hardware related, in which case MS should just own up to it instead of keeping silent.

My SB (i5, 256gb, 8gb, GeforceGPU) keeps crashing/freezing during sleep which causes it to shut down. According to the windows reliability monitor it has been happening every day multiple time.
I though I was going crazy because I clearly remember not turning it off before putting it to sleep. I recently had my original SB replaced with a new one which fixed most of the issues from blue screens to flickering that would not go away. But this new one still has the Hello Camera issue where it wont turn on during startup and this new problem that has popped up.
Is this caused by a hardware defect? I really don't want to drive 23km to the other side of my city to get another replacement at a Microsoft store if the issues aren't resolved. Here's an image on the report. As you can see, there are 17 critical events today not to mention all the other days as well. Thanks.
If anyone has a solution that isn't a complete factory reset or system reinstall (I've tried them before) that would be great.

After installing the May 24 updates I returned to the power defaults and my Surface Book slept through the night last night and woke correctly this morning. Ordinarily it would usually crash. I was away from my Surface Book for about four hours this afternoon. Before I left I closed the clipboard. When I returned and opened the clipboard it had crashed. Unfortunately, at least in my case, the Sleep of Death issue has not been resolved.
I too had my hopes up. We had a HS Graduation to go to this afternoon and just got back. Before we left I had closed the lid on an open Chrome browser and MS Outlook. I just got home 4 1/2 hours later and opened my SB to a crashed system. After booting from scratch my Event Viewer shows the same Critical Crash Error yet again. Just Damn. It's beginning to look more and more like a hardware problem that the MS Engineers cannot fix.

2016-05-25T18:24:45+00:00 My Surface Book is plugged in most of the time except when I am traveling. I set Sleep to Never when plugged in. And I set it to Hibernate after 30 minutes when on battery. This is my temporary work around.
I set my Surface Book back to power defaults to see what happens after the recent updates.
For testing I simply closed the lid when I finished working last night.
Event Viewer showed no critical errors this morning.
No crash last night.
