My Surface Book is plugged in most of the time except when I am traveling. I set Sleep to Never when plugged in. And I set it to Hibernate after 30 minutes when on battery. This is my temporary work around.

My SB (i5, 256gb, 8gb, GeforceGPU) keeps crashing/freezing during sleep which causes it to shut down. According to the windows reliability monitor it has been happening every day multiple time.
I though I was going crazy because I clearly remember not turning it off before putting it to sleep. I recently had my original SB replaced with a new one which fixed most of the issues from blue screens to flickering that would not go away. But this new one still has the Hello Camera issue where it wont turn on during startup and this new problem that has popped up.
Is this caused by a hardware defect? I really don't want to drive 23km to the other side of my city to get another replacement at a Microsoft store if the issues aren't resolved. Here's an image on the report. As you can see, there are 17 critical events today not to mention all the other days as well. Thanks.
If anyone has a solution that isn't a complete factory reset or system reinstall (I've tried them before) that would be great.

2016-05-25T07:34:29+00:00 I changed my power settings a couple of weeks ago so that it hibernates after 120 min when plugged in (same as on battery) and it hasn't crashed overnight since, whereas previously it was every night (when plugged in).
This is not a solution because now it crashes during the day instead! Leave it long enough so that it goes to sleep and there is a risk that when I come back to it, it will be dead. And that's a lot more irritating, actually, because I'm typically in the middle of something, but it's been much less frequent for me -- only twice over the period -- so I will persevere with it like this for the moment.
It seems to me that it can happen any time that the machine is asleep, and if it's asleep all night then it's more likely to happen then.
I have just applied the May 24 updates, and I remain hopeful.

You close the lid on your SB at night so that it goes to sleep, and when you open it in the morning the machine reboots from scratch, as if from power-off. It has crashed overnight and lost all your open windows, but there is no crash dump and nothing in the event log to explain the cause, just a message on start-up that says "The previous system shutdown at <time> was unexpected". It's as if all power was terminated abruptly so that the system had no time to react.
Presumably, you don't have this problem or you'd recognize it?

And the 2 hour thing isn't set in stone -- this time frame can be changed and even totally disabled (so the system only sleeps and never hibernates). One should not assume that everyone has left the default settings as they are ...
I've had a different issue since getting the new nvidia driver on 5/20 (which installed on my system -- device manager shows the new version), but Windows Update reports that the install failed. My SB has been failing to wake from sleep, but it isn't powered off. It is usually warm when this happens, and requires me to hold the power button for a good 20 seconds to force the system to power off and then do a cold boot. This is, of course, in addition to the ongoing sleep-crash/shutdown problem.
I just installed today's (5/24) firmware updates, so I'm going to be watching my SB for the next week or so to see if the sleep-crash issue has finally been addressed. I really hope so.

2016-05-22T04:36:51+00:00 This isn't sleep, this is hibernate. Sleep is the first two hours after closing the cover. Then the machine hibernates after that. Lots of folks here interchange the two words sleep and hibernate. they are in fact different.
Also, when people say "crash" that means many things to most people. I would like more info on the crash.
The one thing I would disable is the wireless network card while sleeping. It will consume the most power anyway.
