Surface Pro 7 Slow WiFi

Hello everyone,

I am working with my new Surface Pro 7 i5 one or two days now and unfortunately, I still have severe wifi issues after installing all updates. Speed is between 0 and 1,250 kbit/s.

After searching for this issue, I found several entries describing this kind of problem and some workarounds like setting the MIMO Power Safe Mode to a different value. (as described here) I did all this but still, there is no improvement.

Any other suggestions on this? Is this a known bug? Is there a patch on its way? Is Microsoft working on this?

Any help is greatly appreaciated.

Thanks a lot

Tim

    Hello everyone,

    Nothing did help. Not the proposed steps above, nor replacing the device.

    What did help a little bit was changing the settings as described on a German Microsoft site that can be found here.

    The settings which were made (slightly changed quote from the linked page):

    1. 802.11a/b/g -> disabled
    2. Transmition Power -> Medium-High
    3. Throuput Booster -> Enabled
    4. ARP offload -> Enabled
    5. Fat Channel Intolerant -> Disabled
    6. Roaming Aggressivness -> Highest
    7. Preffered Band -> 5Ghz

    The problem seems to be router related (in my case it is a vodafone router called easybox) but is not the fault of the router vendor as all other devices are working properly. Perhaps it is better to say that the problem is with the Surface pro 7 and its interaction with specific routers.

    Hopefully Microsoft can fix this issue via a software update, soon.

    At least it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.

    If I can assist in any troubleshooting please let me know.

    Or give us a patch - that would be even better.

    Cheers,

    Tim

    Hi timtos,

    Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community.  We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you and we appreciate your effort in making sure that everything is up-to-date on your Surface device.

    Since you had tried those workarounds and there is no improvement with the connection speed, I would like you to do the following troubleshooting steps below.

    Step 1: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

    Step 2: Uninstall/Re-install Wi-Fi Driver

    **** Open Device Manager

    Choose and expand Network Adapter

                Right-click on Intel Wi-Fi Driverand select***"Uninstall"***

    For the pop up warning*: if a check box appears and says “delete driver software”*

    do not check the box. Leave it empty.  Just select “Uninstall” at the bottom of the pop up.

    Step 3: Update Drivers and Firmware

    Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going toSettings > System > About.

                 Go to **Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 7 then clickDownload** on the next page.

                 Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and clickNext.

                 After downloading, run and install the .msi thenRestart.

    Step 4:  If the above mentioned instructions won't fix the issue, kindly reset the network of your Surface device by:

                Going to Settings > Choose Network & Internet > **Look for "Network Reset"**under Status.

    After clicking the **"Network Reset",**your device will restart automatically after 5 minutes.

    Once it restarted, kindly connect your Surface device to your Wi-Fi by re-entering your Wi-Fi password.

    Thank you. I am so frustrated after weeks of dealing with this and paying nearly $1000 to have someone  help me migrate my data (and may need to do it all over again).  I’ll probably return machine. They shouldn’t be selling this machine with this problem not fixed after more than 6 months on the Surface Pro 7! Level 2 support never mentioned doing this hub piece and never asked me about router. It is so painful to slowly climb the MS support ladder. Weeks of this! They should be centralizing these calls. Thank you for listening.

    Hi timtos,

    Thank you for your immediate response.  Since the issue's still occurring after doing those troubleshooting steps,  I would like you to run the network troubleshooter. Simply follow the instructions below:

    To run the Network troubleshooter

    1. Select the Start button > Settings > Network & Internet >Status.

    Run the Network troubleshooter 2. Under Change your network settings, select Network troubleshooter. 3. Follow the steps in the troubleshooter, and see if that fixes the problem.

    If that doesn’t fix your connection problem, try these things:

    • Reset the TCP/IP stack
    • Release the IP address
    • Renew the IP address
    • Flush and reset the DNS client resolver cache

    To run the above networking commands in a command prompt window

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type Command prompt.  TheCommand Prompt button will appear. To the right of it, selectRun as administrator > Yes.
    • At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order, and then check to see if that fixes your connection problem:
    • Type netsh winsock reset and select Enter.
    • Type netsh int ip reset and select Enter.
    • Type ipconfig /release and select Enter.
    • Type ipconfig /renew and select Enter.
    • Type ipconfig /flushdns and select Enter.

    You can find some helpful information from this link: Fix Network Connection Issues In Windows including the above mentioned troubleshooting.

    Note: If in case you will still experience the same issue, please uninstall any 3rd party antivirus installed on your surface device if there's one. If none, please reset your surface device back to it's default operating system for us to identify whether the issue is hardware or just software related issue.

    To reset your surface device :

    • Open Windows Settings
    • Choose Updates & Security
    • Select "Recovery"
    • Under "Reset This PC" option, click "Get Started"
    • Lastly, select "remove everything" to reset your Surface device back default settings.

    Note: Kindly save all your files before resetting your Surface device so you won't get issues retrieving it. If after the reset you still get the same issue, please contact support for replacement options.

    If this answer your question, we highly encourage you to inform our Community by clicking on Yes or marking my post as an answer. This will help other members who may have the same issue as you. Otherwise, don't hesitate to update us so we can further assist you.

    Hi Crest_Z,

    thank you very much for your help. I did each and every step but unfortunately there is no increase in speed on my Surface Pro and I still have to switch to my notebook if I want to work online...

    Any other ideas? Can this also be a Hardware issue? (I hope not)

    Cheers and thanks again,

    Tim
