Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere.

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

I agree and should have used better terminology. I also doubt that the keyboards and the Surfaces themselves are broken as far as their hardware is concerned. I got to literally watch this 1 stop with nothing done to the hardware...until the firmware updated and then it stopped. The same happened to my Surface Pro 1 and I thought it was attributable to age. I guess the keyboards are only bricked with the units they came with and this doesn't seem to be a small matter only affecting a few people. In many of the threads here that I have been through there are 400+ people having the same problems. While I realize that there are going to be some repeats across the threads...that's still a ton of people and not a peep from MS other than a few techs that really never said anything.

I have the same problem. I had a fully working Type cover keyboard until just a few hours ago when I updated to 1903. The update was pending some fixes that had to be done to install. I thought this could be part of the issue with why my daughter's SP4 was running slow. The update completed...The Surface rebooted and now my keyboard is no longer recognized. All that will show up under KB and Mouse are HID compliant mice or KBs...nothing about the type cover. I have attempted to do all of the troubleshooting to no avail and I disagree with the hardware issue part if it doesn't work in UEFI.. Mine no longer works in UEFI at all and the lights no longer come on except the power light. I didn't move the surface the entire time it updated other than well into the troubleshooting when I separated the KB from the tablet. This is the 2nd type cover I have had bricked by an update. The 1st was on an original surface pro and now this one and MS has not said a word even though it is all over their forums...COME ON MS....ADDRESS THIS!!!!!!!

Actually, I would expect that neither of the keyboards are really bricked.  For many of us, connecting the keyboard to a different Surface results in it working normally.   But this issue definitely causes problems with the afflicted Surface being able to properly detect it.  That aside, I really wish Microsoft would acknowledge that this issue has affected many users and actually try to do something about it.

    Hello Ye Soe,

Thank you for reaching out Surface Community. May I know if the backlight is lit though keyboard and touchpad doesn't work? For the meantime kindly open System Restore and follow the instructions on the option two. In step 12 please choose the date where your type cover is still working. If that doesn't help, please try to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard 3 times. If issue persist

run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and follow the on screen instructions. Once done, go to Download drivers and firmware for Surface and download the .msi file. Restart the device and test.

    • If there's not an .msi file that corresponds to the build of Windows 10 you have installed, select the .msi file that's closest to your build number.
    • To find out which version and build of Windows you're using, select Start > Settings  > System  > About , then look under Windows Specifications to find your operating system version and OS build number.

Hope that helps. Looking forward for your response.

    Best regards,

    KarenJune_F

Same here, recently my Surface's type cover has stopped functioning completely. For the last few days it has been functioning oddly--it seemed like during updates, if the update wasn't "finished" or needed to restart again (I run a partitioned system with another OS, so I manually select Windows upon startup) the type cover would be unresponsive to the point it wouldn't receive power, and I would have to use the onscreen keyboard to navigate my boot menu.  It seemed to fix itself after I made sure all updates were complete and restarted a few times, but now nothing seems to work. When I checked device manager to physically check the driver, the type cover driver is missing completely.

I've cleaned the connectors with no luck. I've run Windows diagnostics and nothing is reported.  I've done the force shut down and two-button shut down to no result. I've reinstalled firmware from Microsoft's msi's but the driver fails to reappear.  It does not work in UEFI.  I've used UEFI to disable and reenable the type cover port.  Short of rebooting to factory settings, I've done everything.

Restoring to factory is my absolute least desirable outcome.  I'll try the two button boot again but I have doubts.

Interestingly, I've noticed that when I'm in the boot menu to choose my OS, anytime my typecover will not be recognized the icon in the lower part of the screen used to bring up the touch keyboard will flicker and so will the onscreen keyboard, like it's constantly being lost.  Once windows boots the onscreen keyboard is fine.
