Surface Pro 4 type cover suddenly not working.

I don't know what happened. I turned my Surface Pro 4 on the other day and the type cover is dead. No lights. No response. No indication that it's working at all.  I rarely take my surface anywhere. 

This started on July 9th 2018. My system information is below. I've gone through all of the steps in the "Troubleshoot your Surface Type Cover or keyboard" page. I've tried to manually download and install the latest firmware and drivers from the "Download firmware and drivers for surface" page. I picked SurfacePro4_Win10_16299_1801701_1.msi. My device manager does not show the "Surface Touch Cover Filter Device" under keyboards or anywhere. It only shows the HID keyboard and cannot detect my type cover. The type cover is completely unresponsive. Also, my windows updates are completely up to date. I've provided the links to the troubleshooting pages I used below.

    Mine is still working like a champ.  Auto update should take care of finding the missing driver when you delete it.  That experience talking, not written promises.

    I understand your total frustration.  As silly as it sounds, here's my fix.  I started with the dead keyboard connected and powered up, went went to conrol panel/devices and removed the keyboard driver.  Then I detached the keyboard and rebooted.  When the reboot was finished, I reattached the keyboard.  Rather than reinstall the old, corrupt driver, Win10 found a driver (I don't know if it was the same or updated but it was different than the resident corrupt driver, checksum) and installed it.  Mine has been working ever since.  This is one of those procedural things that they don't tell you in the fine print and you're just supposed to know them.  Jack Daniels make the whole thing better.

    is it still working until now or after rebooting? 

    I'm afraid if i remove the driver i won't be able to get it back,  even though a dead typecover

    Well stated. The Surface Pro is a brilliant design, but I can't consider another one after this experience. I've wasted a lot of hours trying to fix this myself; trying every suggested fix multiple times. I've had enough.

    So I have to maintain about 30 total Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 tablet's at my job; and we've found the issue is entirely with the Surface itself. Once the type cover stops working, either a firmware update will resolve the issue or it won't. I've tried working type covers from other tablets and they won't work on this single Surface tablet; but it's type cover works fine on other Surface tablet's. So it is the tablet, not the type cover; in my experience. 

    Unfortunately we've had to replace those type covers with a Bluetooth model I found on Amazon, which works ok and is an adequate replacement.

    We've been slowly starting to replace these Surface tablet's which aren't even five years old with Dell's equivalent tablet and am having much better luck in the reliability department.

    It's a shame; because the hardware design of the Surface is awesome but M$FT's firmware and drivers are just horrid. Along with issues of Windows 10 itself, it makes for a very unpleasant Surface experience.
